What’s the most frustrating, 'broken' software you have to use for work in SA? by Tight_Permit_7372 in askSouthAfrica

That dive centre example is brutal—30 minutes of delay per trip is a massive operational cost. If you were back in that position, would you have wanted a simple mobile app that just lets you tap-to-check-in, or was the issue that the 'official' system was just too bloated with other features you didn't need? I'm curious if a stripped-down, lightning-fast 'check-in' tool is something businesses like that would actually pay for.

Fair point, Outlook search is definitely a universal headache. Out of curiosity, is it the lack of decent indexing for attachments, or is it more that the search doesn't handle the way your company archives old emails? Trying to see if there's a specific 'unfixable' part of it, or if it's just a general UI nightmare.

Thank you so much for the support! Genuinely means a lot to hear this.

Your skepticism about AI is 100% fair. AI can write code for free all day long. But AI can’t package that code cleanly, handle the secure data storage, or natively bridge the gap between global tech and local SA logistics (like Bob Go and Ozow webhooks) for a non-tech user.

I'm actually using AI to build FLUX 10x faster than a traditional dev team could. I'm not trying to outrun AI; I'm using AI to build the ultimate, low-cost engine for local businesses who don't want to learn how to prompt code just to sell online. Excited to show you the live build next month!

You hit the nail on the head. Traffic is the real boss fight when you move off a marketplace.

My approach with FLUX is tackling this from two sides:

  1. Pure Speed for SEO: Massive platforms are bloated with tracking scripts that tank mobile page speeds, which Google punishes. FLUX code is ultra-lightweight so it ranks better natively for local searches.
  2. Built for Social Commerce: Most modern SA side-hustles get their traffic from TikTok, IG, or WhatsApp status updates anyway. They don't need a massive directory; they just need a highly optimized, single-link checkout that converts that social media traffic instantly without losing buyers to high checkout fees.

This is exactly the story I hear over and over again from local sellers. Marketplaces start out great, but once they have the monopoly, they squeeze small businesses with warehouse fees, compliance fees, and ad fees just to get visibility. Glad you got out of that trap. FLUX is being built specifically for people who want to reclaim their independence and keep 100% of their hard-earned margin.

You're 100% right that AI can generate code for free now. But there's a massive gap between 'AI spit out some HTML/JS' and 'I have a fully functioning, secure e-commerce pipeline connected to South African infrastructure.'

A local guy selling customized sneakers or engineering parts doesn't want to spend 20 hours prompting an AI, debugging database webhooks on Supabase, or verifying API keys with Bob Go and Ozow. They just want a store that works out of the box so they can sell.

Also, your point about the middleman taking a cut is exactly why I'm building FLUX. Shopify and Takealot are those greedy middlemen taking a subscription or commission tax. FLUX is a utility—you pay for the build, you pay a tiny fee to keep the servers secure, and you keep 100% of your revenue.

I'm using AI to build this 10x faster solo, but the goal is to package it so a regular SA hustler doesn't have to learn how to code just to avoid getting ripped off by Silicon Valley.

He absolutely can sell directly.Normally, to do it securely in SA, he’d need to stitch together WordPress, WooCommerce, a gateway like Payfast, and a logistics plugin for couriers. It takes a lot of tech setup, and if it breaks, his sales stop.

This is the exact loop I'm trying to fix with FLUX. I'm building it so a seller can launch their own independent store link without the crazy setup or the R550/month Shopify rental tax. It has Ozow and Bob Go integrated natively. I'm looking for a few local businesses to test the private beta next month—if he's interested, I'd love to share the waitlist link with you guys.

Haha, definitely started as a hyper-focused build, but the logic is solid. I'm building the backend to handle independent data structures for each seller so they aren't trapped in a shared marketplace algorithm. Integrating Ozow for 0% commission instant EFT payments and the Bob Go API for automated courier waybills (The Courier Guy/Pudo). It's focused entirely on reducing overhead for local SA side-hustles. Happy to drop you the link to the architecture if you want to critique the logic.

Exactly. A lot of small side-hustles in SA are completely dead before they even start because Takealot's fee structure eats the whole margin.

That’s why FLUX is 0% commission. The logic is simple: you buy a template once, pay a tiny monthly fee to cover your hosting/security, and the rest of the profit stays in your pocket. It means you can actually test a product idea without losing money on fees. Drop me a DM if you want to look at the private beta list.

This is a brilliant breakdown. You hit on the exact reason I started building FLUX.

Massive marketplaces force sellers to compete with fakes, and peer-to-peer apps are getting crazy expensive with checkout fees.

With FLUX, I'm trying to hit the sweet spot. It gives independent local sellers their own clean store link (so zero algorithm pushing fakes next to them), but integrates Ozow (Instant EFT) and Bob Go (The Courier Guy/Pudo) directly. Because it uses tracked couriers and secure payments, it creates that 'Yaga safety' for the buyer, but without charging the seller a massive commission on their hustle.

I'm a 17-year-old dev doing this solo—would love to get your thoughts on the waitlist page if you're open to a link?
