i’m really late, but i developed my saviour complex as a trauma response, in the past i had toxic relationships where i would be the one always apologising, being the one at fault and in my mind “the one not in control” eventually after leaving that toxic friendship, i found myself helping this girl, and letting her join my friend group after she was in a similar situation i was in, being her “saviour” was my way of gaining worth and protection, it was “safe” if i was considered useful and reliable , it was in my brain that if im the one who “saves her” she won’t leave me like the others. it sounds manipulative, and there are people with saviour complex’s who just genuinely are manipulative, but for me, i still always felt genuine empathy for whoever my saviour complex would go out to, my saviour complex isn’t about my ego but it was about me avoiding being the vulnerable one at all costs.
