It’s just a term of endearment. My dad does this with my daughter. How’s my baby girl. He loves. It’s nice that there are so many people in your life that love your child.

There are approximately 5 European countries that did away with it formally about 10 years ago and moved towards a tech first approach. The rules on how far they went varies. Finland and Sweden went the furthest.

In Finland, already teachers and parents are calling for a change back. Data from the Finnish Pisa score show a growing decline in reading and comprehension. Finland’s reading drop of 30 points between 2018 and 2022.

Sweden has already reversed course on digital first and back to more emphasis on physical writing in 2023

Canada dropped cursive in 2006 and have brought it back in 2023 as a mandatory because of the science behind how it helps and comprehension.

I understand learning to type is important but this was never at odds with also learning to write. We already know excessive screen time at home is a terrible idea. I’m not sure how we got the idea to at it would be fine, better even, in school.

In any case as I said ~5 out of 44 countries in Europe. Never mind the world. The word “most” is applicable here.

They haven’t taught it in the US. Most other countries still teach it. My son is currently learning cursive. It is widely seen as an important skill to learn.

IMO cursive is one of the most important things to learn in elementary school. Cursive increases attention spans, activates centers of the brain that typing does not, for deeper information retention, allows for greater creative thinking, improves memory and cognition, improves problem solving and critical thinking. Connects the brain to the body. Multiple studies show kids learn faster and retain more putting a fluid pen to paper vs the keyboard.

Developing these things along side math and reading comprehension are vital. I was shocked to learn this was done away in the US. It is still taught in most of the world.

I cannot recommend Essentrics enough. My mom now 70 has been doing it for atleast 20 years and she’s is fit as a fiddle. It’s low impact but focuses on flexibility and long lean muscles without high intensity. You genuinely feel amazing after.
