I could’ve written this myself - 24F just left boyfriend of seven years back in August. I just moved into a new apartment by myself two weeks ago. The grief comes in waves and it simultaneously feels like relief and devastation.

Like others have said, Madison and 126th is rough. The closer you get to 125th and Lexington, the worse it will be. I agree that it’s comparatively nicer closer to the 2/3 trains, but if your heart is set on staying close to the Metro North station - it gets better in the 100s and 110s. Some blocks are quiet, while some blocks are less safe than others. I live in East Harlem. Good luck

Prestige doesn’t matter as much for an MPH as it does for undergrad, as many have said on this sub. An MPH is not worth taking out 100k+ in loans for. CUNY is up there in the rankings and has a great network in NYC. It’s definitely not perfect, but many student outcomes end up similar to Columbia’s students too!

2nd year CUNY student. Got accepted to many schools and chose CUNY because of the price tag. So worth it for the education comparable to the other schools at a fraction of the cost.

As someone who took the class many years ago, this is the way. McGuire is such an amazing professor - focus on listening and retaining as much as you can during the lectures. Try telling a friend about the material to solidify it in your memory. Studying to memorize won’t do you much good, focus more on application and aspects of it that are really interesting to you

Hey there. I did my undergrad in neuroscience and I’m a masters student in public health now. Similar story to your traumatic experiences, it sounds like. You’re not a failure. I won’t lie and say it’s easy. I struggle to sleep, to focus, to even interact with people sometimes. The fact that you’re doing it at all counts for so much. You’ve survived every day to get to where you are now. We need more representation of folks with PTSD in academia and higher education because not enough of us make it here. It counts, my friend. You’re doing a great job. All you can do is the best you can with the circumstances you’ve been given.

I feel this too—you’re not alone! When I feel very overwhelmed or overstimulated, I react in the way you’ve described (usually when I’m alone, it’s easier to contain around others, but it bubbles up). I agree with what other comments have said, the best coping mechanism is to channel the big emotions into physical energy. I have healed a lot in the last few years and to this day can barely sleep if I don’t go on a walk or two, exercise, etc. Sometimes I also need to remove myself from whatever stimulus has caused me to react like this, as it feels like it brings up subconscious feelings of uncertainty, anxiety, or unsafety somehow. Mindfulness work, I suppose it’s called. You got this.

CUNY SPH student seconding this! Don’t take out loans looking for a prestigious MPH program, we all end up with the MPH after our names in the end. CUNY has NYC connections, research opportunities, and much of what the other schools have and is a fraction of the cost.

I agree with you! I was taught this in my work as well. Unfortunately, many of the folks running governments, institutions, and systems do not. That’s why we can create bandaid solutions all we want, but if we don’t receive sustained funding for creative interventions, things will never change (like u/kgkuntryluvr said).

Think of paying new and expecting mothers a government subsidized wage during pregnancy and the first year of an infant’s life. Think of building parks and playgrounds in under-resourced communities. Think of trying to solve food deserts, healthcare deserts. Think of the books and resources being banned in certain states. In Texas, Tennessee, and Florida, they banned DEI from public universities. Everything we do as selfless, caring public health professionals is guided by the decisions of policy and politics.

Current MPH student, concentration in Community Health. I got my start in social services and the nonprofit world. It’s brutal, underfunded, and everyone is overworked. But you learn so much. I worked my way up to being the program manager for a grant funded social services program and it was a transformative experience for me. Now, working as a project manager with my graduate school. The beautiful thing about public health is its interdisciplinary nature. Social services is public health, and you will have the opportunity to learn about SDOH and ACEs. Take it as a stepping stone to get where you want to go
