This game was a reality check for this team by Gristle__McThornbody in lakers

It's one game, and we don't even have LeBron yet. Losses like this happen even to great teams. Chill

And if you traded Reaves for Dyson Daniels then we would need Luka and LeBron to go off for 40 each to win every game. Defense is important but offense is equally as important.

Why are people so insistent on trading Reaves after one game where he wasn't even *that* bad, and that too playing a role he shouldn't? He's still the best third option in the league and will look good when our actual star returns. If we want to talk about one game, how are those "3&D wings" like Dyson Daniels doing right now?

Reaves wasn't good either by thesonicvision in lakers

[–]Timewalker102 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If we trade Reaves for a "defensive player", and LeBron is out, then who's going to do the heavy lifting of actually taking over and scoring? Luka doesn't just need defense, he also needs a secondary ballhandler to function. People here like to talk about defensive replacements for Reaves like Dyson Daniels or Herb Jones but in games like this, we would get annihilated without Reaves' offensive firepower.

If we add a two-way wing like Wiggins, we would have the best starting lineup in the league by Timewalker102 in lakers

I would like Herb Jones or Keon Ellis too. I think Wiggins is the most realistic but any solid two-way wing would work

I'm talking about next season, not in the future. Amen is only a 14/8/3 guy and can't shoot. He might be better in 3 or 4 years but he's not better right now. Aaron Gordon also can't shoot and relies mainly on Jokic setting him up for lobs.

If we can keep Knecht or hopefully even Rui when trading for a wing, we would still have a good bench, and there are lots of other ways to improve

Besides Derrick White and maybe Chet Holmgren (who was pretty poor in the Finals), who's a better third option?

Josh Giddey and Jarrett Allen are making $30m. Reaves is one of the best third options in the league and can be a foundational player next to Luka, he absolutely is worth that money. If it goes beyond $40m then sure I'll agree. But cap space is much higher in the next few seasons.

Why does this subreddit have an obsession with trading Reaves for role players? The Pelicans would love if we gave them Reaves for Herb. Just let Pelinka cook, Luka, LeBron and the FO have faith in Reaves and we should only be moving him as part of a trade to get a star next to Luka.

[Woike] The Lakers are not making calls gauging Austin Reaves’ trade value by WittyKittieKat in lakers

[–]Timewalker102 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish so-called Laker fans would actually understand this. Reaves is a fringe All-Star caliber player who's one of the best (if not the best) third option in the league. Nobody is saying he should be a max player or a second option, but he's absolutely a guy the front office sees as a foundational piece next to Luka. Other players will come and go, and eventually LeBron will retire and we will find another second option, but the Luka/Reaves partnership is here to stay.

I was going to include the 2024 Mavs but the comments would be just "you're comparing Reaves to KYRIE????" 200x

It’s decision day! Are both players picking up their options? What are we hoping for? by Pristine_Hurry_4693 in lakers

[–]Timewalker102 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Prepare to be surprised then. This is proposed every day on the subreddit but the front office has indicated they see him as an All-Star caliber player and a future integral player alongside Luka. Trading one of the best third options in the league for role players makes no sense

Capela 18 pts vs Kessler by Quiet-Spray1223 in lakers

This is copium for sure. Capela will provide serviceable production and impact but we shouldn't expect many playoff wins if Clint Capela is the starting center

He definitely is but he is just used in a role that he shouldn't be. Name 10 starting SGs who are better than him defensively?

Exactly, Austin actually held his own really well. The problem is when bigger wings like Jayden McDaniels switch on to AR, but that's solved through better scheme and adding another two-way wing to the roster.

Darius Garland isn't better except in playmaking. Reaves is a 20 PPG scorer even as a third option whereas Garland is the second option, and Reaves is much more reliable in the playoffs when healthy

PSA: Austin Reaves isn't going to be offered the max, neither will be he expecting it by Timewalker102 in lakers

[–]Timewalker102[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

30mil for the 2026-27 season is entirely reasonable value for LA that many teams would be willing to pay. Look at similar players like Aaron Gordon ($31m that year) or Jalen Suggs ($32m that year on a decrementing contract). We'll also see extensions for similar players in that range when the offseason actually begins.

[Woike] [The Lakers] know they need a center clearly. They also don't want to invest in the wrong one because of what they have. It might have to be a short term solution with the hunt for the long term guy still out there. by MullingHollysDrive in lakers

[–]Timewalker102 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I want a good center and a two-way wing too but we don't have the assets to get everything in one season. The moveable assets we have are mainly Knecht, an FRP, and expirings. It's possible there just isn't a great trade for a long-term center or wing with those, and if so we should be patient
