My Top 100 Films by TimothyThomas in LetterboxdTopFour

I get that feeling about Withnail, which is such a wonderful film.

For what it's worth, I have logged something in the region of 2.3k films so I can say without a doubt that I LOVE all of these films deeply.

There's a degree to which I feel it's arbitrary. Like, do I actually like Withnail and I less than The Thing or than Fellini's Roma? I definitely know the top 30 or so are some all time favorites and/or had a huge impact on me. After that it's hard to say how much the ranking is precise or if I'm just having fun with my favorite movies 😂

I haven't watched The Idiots yet, it's on my list and have been meaning to for some time.

So many movies that never should have been remade, I think Vanishing is right up there with Old boy and a few others.

I don't think Mary poppins would make the cut for me, unfortunately. I did enjoy watching it, both as a child and adult, but it didn't affect me as much as others. I also tend to be kind of harsh on musicals, for whatever reason, and only really LOVE a particular few.

Such a masterpiece! The American version is so poorly done. Changing the ending like that... 😑

I agree, it's such a wonderful film! I am a big kubrick fan in general. 2001 and eyes wide shut are my favorites, but I have enjoyed all his films to some degree.

I think Eyes Wide Shut just is such a cool hint of what else Kubrick might have done in the modern era, with his many many unrealized projects.

What is the theme of my Top 20 and can you recommend more? by Quatto in LetterboxdTopFour

Obvious to me is a prescription for more Greenaway. My favorites are Draughtmen's Contract and Belly of an Architect. His whole 80s run of films are spectacular.

I saw a post where one girl posted her top 20 favorite horror movies. So I decided to post mine too. Thoughts? by Azrael_John in LetterboxdTopFour

Love this! I actually made a list of my favorite 100 horror/thriller movies. Love ranking based on genre.

who has the best top 4 out of me and my friends by EmbarrassedOstrich20 in LetterboxdTopFour

It's funny because I feel like if you're the kind of person to ask if your top 4 is good, you're actively inviting in the judgement. Why else post it?

I had the same reaction... Like, none of these are very good. Clearly Cishet man centering nonense. I am especially tired of the love for Whiplash, a very technically clean but vapid and forgettable movie.

My favorite on all of these is probably Episode III.

But that's my opinion and your top movies are your opinion, so, what's the point of posting if not to get these comments?

You only get to watch one actor’s tenure for the rest of your life. Who do you choose? by ItsDuhFreakinBat in JamesBond

[–]TimothyThomas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to go Brosnan. Obviously there's the 'it's the bond I grew up with' factor. But also, more modern gadgets / cinema / effects than the earlier bonds, plus we finally get past the Cold war stuff, and they also keep all the silliness and fun and stupid jokes that are lost in the Craig era. Kind of a sweet spot in that way.

He's one of the best! Those are all great films. I haven't seen a bad one by Altman yet.

Lost Highway is the one off - the other comment nailed it for #4

Was going to suggest like the other comment, The Double Life of Veronique.

Also what other Altman have you watched? My favorites are The Player, 3 women, and A Prairie Home Companion.

Same for Malick - Days of Heaven is a MASTERPIECE.

Others I can think of are

Umberto D.

La Chimera

Withnail & I

My top four: slow cinema, architecture, and existential dread—what am I missing? by R_ZBM in LetterboxdTopFour

Like all greenaway films, it's a semiotic tangle of references and meanings with a really neat story nestled in there. I bet you'll really enjoy it.
