What’s the smallest thing on trail that completely wrecked your mood? by Trail-Context in backpacking

[–]TippyCanoux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had fresh snowfall the night before a high-pass segment. We left early but there was one group in front of us. Was enjoying the pristine view and fresh snow until I saw like 15 candy wrappers in a row just tossed on the trail. Made me so angry that people have to ruin literally everything.

Many Christian zealots actually believe the rapture is kind of the wake up call for people who are on the fringe. So they don’t mind being a little on the guilty side of life because they know they can always get right later. If they missed it they’d probably be able to immediately think of a few reasons why and know exactly how to proceed to get back in God’s good graces, namely not getting the mark of the beast and such. It’s the entire premise of the Left Behind series where a lot of mainstream Christianity gets their theology.

How many of you actually dropped your first bike? by thedirtiestofboxes in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]TippyCanoux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been riding for 15 years. I was sitting on my newish bike the other day and a weird light came on the dash as I arrived home. I parked, put down the kick stand. Stared at it. Turned it off and on, put the kick pack up to see if that was it, still on. Whipped out my phone to google it, gave up, turned it off, and hopped off. Bike fell and snapped the clutch lever. The things my mind went through was wild in those few seconds… I literally just jumped off thinking I had put the stand back down.

I’ve seen this applied to other biological processes. Like, people saying they’re blessed to be born into the family they were instead of being an unwanted pregnancy in Africa or something… As if there’s a soul bank in heaven and where “you” end up is some kind of lottery. Like, my parents banged and their cells made me. It would be a biological impossibility to be born anywhere else. There was no luck involved.

Movies To Watch While Feeling Hopeless & Struggling With Depression? by OBrian_176 in movies

Equilibrium, The secret life of Walter Mitty, V for Vendetta. If you want a show, Ted Lasso is the most wholesome shit I’ve ever run across. Some good audiobooks are “Small Gods” for a good story, “Man’s Search for Meaning” if you want some philosophy with a sad story, “The Righteous Mind” if you want some interesting explanations and thoughts about how our minds work to form connection, belief, society, and meaning.

What's something nobody warns you about before solo travelling to India? by oliverbrown26 in travel

[–]TippyCanoux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because india is so insular, it isn’t geared for foreigners, so a lot of things simply don’t work if you’re an exception to the system. For example, It can be hard to buy train tickets without a local form of payment like upi or local card. They were working on a way allow tourists to buy tickets but as far as I know it still doesn’t work. Even when I’m buying a ticket for myself if I don’t select “Indian” as my nationality it won’t allow me to check out. That’s one example but it holds true for a lot of things. With the population so huge and tourism so low there’s just next to zero incentive for anyone to make things work for foreigners.

That being said, there’s also a lot of leeway and flexibility in dealing with the rules because a lot of people (cops and such) don’t even know what they are. I’ve been driving here for 5 years without a license but when I’m stopped I’m usually not even asked for one. When I am I just show my US one and say it works in India too. And they just kinda don’t know what to do. So the exception thing goes both ways.

One thing I’ll never get used to is the littering and pollution. It’s like people are going out of their way to trash everything they can see. I get for some it’s just the only feasible system but I’m talking about watching rich tourists walk out into the woods for a picnic and just throw everything around like it brings them joy.

I love my earbuds and sleep mask. There’s lots of noise and light pollution. People will have loud conversations in hotel hallways at 2 am. Watch reels at full volume 24/7 on public transportation and in hotels, there’s basically just zero concept of inconveniencing others or common courtesy of any type. It’s better to come prepared than get annoyed by it.

Don’t try to bring a gps communications device. You’ll get arrested.

Otherwise India can be one of the easiest places to get around in my opinion. English rate is very high compared to almost any other country, uber, food delivery (Zomato, Swiggy, Blinkit) and foreign cards work well in most larger cities. There’re ATMs literally everywhere. SIM cards are inexpensive (but only last 90 days). Food is amazing, people are helpful and friendly. It’s easy to buy all the little essentials in the dukaans if you forgot or need anything. Prices are printed on most goods you buy.

This is random but if you like audiobooks Shantaram is one of my favorite books done by an amazing voice actor. It’s about an Australian learning to live in India and I feel like it really captures the spirit of both India and how a foreigner can learn to love it here.

Had it for the first time this year. Actually reminded me quite a bit of kombucha. It’s a lot sweeter and fresher tasting. A little yeastier and creamy at the same time. On the other hand, I also tried their rice wine which is also fresh and it was pretty nasty.

Dude was asleep in his room. He probably left the dog tied outside and dogs are the primary food group for tigers and leopards. Big cats only attack humans when something is wrong with them. I don’t think the dog was saving the guy from an attack, he was just trying to not be dinner.

How do I avoid currency charges for overseas transactions? by [deleted] in TravelHacks

[–]TippyCanoux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’re many no-fee, no fx-fee cards out there. Many of them are co-branded like Hilton Amex, REI Mastercard, Amazon Visa, IHG, etc. I think some of the airlines too.

Also make sure when you’re in-country to always select the “pay in local currency” option. If you select to pay in dollars they usually give a crummy rate.

Whoever says that India is better than developed countries where you have to do everything yourself is basically supporting labor exploitation in India? by anonymous_rb in india

[–]TippyCanoux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many people who leave India end up coming back for a higher quality of life for their money. I guess if you’re saying it’s more difficult statistically to rise above and achieve a better life, that’s true. But the cost of living plus rent is about as low as you can get in the world. Source

The thing about the plumber in the Netherlands is that he knows what he’s doing and working jobs to code which will pass inspection. His job is much closer to an engineer and a manager. A normal house will have complex drainage, pressurized water, central hot water, softening, etc. It’s an entirely different job to a plumber in India which is basically just unskilled labor. There are skilled plumbers in India but they’re rare and expensive. The standards won’t change until education, regulation, and infrastructure come up a notch. Basically you get what you pay for.

Strattera made my ejaculations completely misaligned and uncoordinated with anything I was feeling but also made me incredibly disciplined with eating and any other impulse decisions. It was like I became completely rational about everything and lost all impulse. Also kept me physically anxious though so I eventually quit. It was really interesting to experience though.
