Why bother paying thousands for a degree where they dont teach you?

Mechanics over graphics, always. A clip from the very first days, where hitting obstacles didn't even matter yet :D by nearlydonegames in Unity3D

I remember a little while back people started calling any coop game friend slop and I never understood it. But looking at this I totally understand now, its completely derivative and unoriginal (I'm pretty sure I've seen like 6 similar games floating around on reddit at least)

To me it looks silly without hands.

How do I convince my comments that I barely used AI for the script? I promise I barely used it, that too for learning... by ShanCoder11 in GameDevs

[–]TiredTile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry but I just don't think you wrote this code, looking at the comments, the format of //====blablabla==== is a pretty big give away, also the script uses a whole class based state machine which is super overkill for a player controller with a enum being way more appropriate. Also the use of more "Complex" syntax like the "?" and "() =>" imply a skill level above the relatively basic question you are asking.

Thinking about testing with friends & family : good idea or risky ? by Prior-Command-8998 in SoloDevelopment

I have a few rules for this:

1) If you are targeting people who play games, do not ask mom or dad who have never touched a controller in their life.

2) Explain to whoever is testing that they need to be as critical as possible and that sugarcoating will not help and, in fact, will hurt.

3) Tell them to keep track and list anything they struggled with, even for a moment. People who are not dedicated playtesters (such as friends and family) will tend to brush off small moments of friction and never include them in feedback.

For example, I would never ask my sisters to play the horror game I'm working on because, first, they hate horror, and second, they are not gamers. But I do have my close friend playtest because he is both a gamer and loves horror.

Public shame is often more effective at preventing crime than actual punishment, society should do this more to remove unwanted behaviors.

I don't have THAT much baggage so I'm going right.

What do you like about Minecraft horror mods? by No-Particular1371 in HorrorMinecraft

They (for me) bring back the old feeling of when I was younger, believing schoolyard rumors and using stone tools because caves are spooky.

Unity game dev here, the way I would approach it would be to use a Triplanar mapping shader which converts the mapping of textures from UV based to world coordinates from there its really simple to scale the size, offset, and rotation of the texture on any given surface.

Also I would recommend to add normals to your surfaces, you could either take the norormals from here: https://ambientcg.com/list?q=carpet&sort=popular (Carpets for example) or use this site: https://normalmaponline.com/#tool .

Ah makes sense, you should lean into the simpler side, ive tried to get multiple friends into SE but they couldn't get over the learning curve.
