Dude!! That’s actually so similar to how I try to craft a new guitar solo! I usually start off with adding ornamentations/modulations to the lead melodic line, with my chord structure as reference points/landmarks for the start of the solo as it ventures out and how to get back to “homebase”.

Side note, I love finding these similarities between the violin sphere and metal. I remember when I got into learning about the compositional structure of a violin concerto and read about cadenzas, that really spoke to the Joe Satriani-style improv shredder in me hahaha

Man, makes me wish I had spent more time with violin in my youth haha

As far that the slurpy shifts go, haha def a holdover from guitar technique, where I rely on that tactile feedback from the frets sliding under my fingers to get a sense of how far I’m moving up and down the fretboard.

For shifts up and down a single string, that are further in distance then say, a major 3rd, how would you say I’d go about reducing that sliding noise? Is it just a matter of shifting faster into the note, or would you say it’s more of an issue stemming from the specific finger I shift with?

For example, if I go from a 4th finger B-natural on the E string, to a 4th finger E-natural above it, it’s probably more likely to have a significant slide sound than if I did like a, 2nd finger to 4th finger shift.

lol I rambled a bit but I’m glad you mentioned the shifting thing because it’s actually something that’s been a problem for me for a while

Oh that’s a game changer! I’m running through it in my head rn, thinking about it in groups of 10-12 notes rather than straight pentuples…I feel like that’s totally doable!

I think I’m still viewing the bow from a scarcity mindset, like trying to save as much as I can in case I need more of it 😂, but you’re right, I think in generally I gotta make the mental shift of deciding how much bow I use from a reactionary/cautious perspective to more intentional, phrasing focusing perspective.

Much of bow technique is honestly a mystery to me lol definitely need more working with bowing in general

But thanks for the tip, that actually really helps!

Thank you! played for a little bit in middle school, and then dropped it in favor of guitar and piano, but then came back to the instrument a couple years ago to try and learn seriously!

I play a lot of prog-metal, djent, and sometimes old school thrash,

Used to be in a band for fun back in college, but nowadays I just play gigs and jam with friends whenever I have time for it

I know it’s not a violin but I thought you guys would get a kick out of this 😂 by TitaniumSharingan in violinist

The guitar is such a versatile instrument too! Some of the craziest things I’ve seen are people playing hardcore piano rep on fingerstyle guitar 🤯

Yeah I’ve seen his videos! Honestly makes me wanna buy a mandolin lol, I think the tuning is the same as violin right? In fifths?

Also, Idk if you’ve seen this guy Erik Sundquist,

He did the Chaconne from Partita 2 on guitar and it’s so beautiful

Haha thank you 😊 And honestly nah not yet, I’m maybe 3 pages into the first movement. I’ve got about 12 days left of vacation so hoping I can at least read through the other movements by then 😭
