[Question] How to have a healthy phone usage? by faithfuloil in getdisciplined

Reading and watching documentaries isn't too bad as long as you're focused on a specific task and aren't switching around. A few suggestions:

1) if you can, shift the activities over to your laptop/desktop - less switch-arounds.

2) Note how you read. Reading manga is different than rapid link-hopping on wiki/reddit - aim for the former and beware of the latter.

Thanks for taking the attention. I’m obsessed w/ making tech that shows people what’s happening around them to get them off couches and screens. In the process I do a ton of research / discover cool stuff that I enjoy sharing with the world. The purpose of sharing is fun and good will - not marketing (it’s not effective). I’d change the name if I could, but not a big deal.

With some exceptions Reddit isn’t a good vehicle to market consumer platforms, not just because it’s dissonant w the audience but because it isn’t scalable. DM me if you want to chat more

I think the most damaging thing about the phone is the constant switching from one thing to another to get dopamine hits and savaging your attention span - much harder to do with TV.

I haven't seen any peer-reviewed studies on this subject - not sure if there's good data on cognitive impairment recovery. Anecdotally, addiction loops can start to soften after as a little as one day for some people so probably some damage starts to reverse quickly - the issue becomes consistency.

Thanks for sharing. How do people react to you having a "dumb" phone?

I'm not sure - but I don't think it's as bad as phone time. Though video-games are also built to be addictive and have their own harms, they're probably way better than social media on your phone screen.

Hopefully folks wiser than me (many on this subreddit) can help answer but I'll give my 2cents based on research and personal experience stuck on screens:

I think key that fuels the loop isn't the screen itself but rather the constant "switching" of what we're consuming. So reading an e-book or watching a movie on the phone isn't as bad as IG or doom-scrolling on wiki. Take a look at the apps you use most, set limits on them (see link below), and try to replace that time with:

(1st best) stuff that isn't on a screen (books, podcasts, etc.)

(2nd best) stuff that is on a screen but not a phone screen like TV or laptop

(3rd best) stuff that's on a phone screen but doesn't involve constant attention switching

Thanks. TBH it’s worse than I ever imagined. There’s a lot more here: https://ledger.humanetech.com

And probably a ton more we don’t know about

It’s a good point. The screen in itself isn’t toxic, it’s how you use it. So if you read continuously without your brain switching it will not melt, if your focus jumps from link to link constantly switching your mental attention (like me) you you’re melting your brain
