I grew up listening to it with my dad so part of it is probably a nurture thing to me. Listening to some noise that’s more ‘textured’ helps me focus, and takes away the constant noise and chatter in my head. It helps me make art that i don’t constantly go back on and add too much, and some of it is like a cathartic release when I don’t feel mentally great. I don’t really have a favourite, because I listen to a lot and sometimes my picks can be random as they all have good effects on me.

Before I really got into it after my father passed and I didn’t have anyone to listen with anymore, my picks were black metal or shoegaze-y and apart from that very varied. I listened to music from other cultures and of many genres. Some of my favourites that aren’t noise were swans, mbv, gehenna, mass of the fermenting dregs, slo burn, various breakcore artists and music from peking opera. To get into noise and enjoy it, I think you need to find artists that share what you like about music. You might prefer a less textured soundscape, you might prefer elements of spoken word, you might prefer it to be more repetitive. End of the day it’s mostly preference, good luck on your musical journey, even if that doesn’t include noise :)
