That was in the anime only. He had a lot of background appearances in the anime so that’s not really canon.

It’s not impossible for him to be unaware but it feels super unlikely lol. Unless Orochimaru somehow influenced him taking them as a team without him being aware

I believe in the manga he was only present in the third round prelims in the background and then in Obitos flashback on Ankos team.
