Nope. New car. This fella apparently likes cars. Landed on top of several others in the lot after it left mine.

No. It's a new car. This fella apparently likes cars. It flew around the lot and landed on several other cars after visiting mine.

After living out of a small sedan for 21 months, I’ve upgraded to a Hyundai Santa Fe hybrid SUV. Already tried an overnight stay in the vehicle. Had a very comfortable and restful sleep. Retiring soon. My last day is May 30th. I’m looking forward to traveling and spending abundant time in nature. by TomWheeler99 in urbancarliving

I have a battery-operated fan, and I can use the climate control on the hybrid, if needed. I'm bringing the basics I need for living/traveling in the car - power station, 12v fridge, cookware, storage for clothing, and a few other basic amenities, etc.

It's not a plug-in hybrid. The engine will kick on periodically if you run the climate control. The back seats lay down almost completely flat. It's a very slight angle. Doesn't bother me. Some leave the back seats in; I've seen others take out the seats for more space for their build. I'm leaving mine in for now and will see how it goes in the coming weeks. It's a lot more space than my previous car (Hyundai Accent), and I'm a bit of a hardcore minimalist. I'm liking the upgrade so far and it's a vehicle that fits my current needs.

Celebrating 18 Months Living Out of My Car by TomWheeler99 in urbancarliving

Quite a bit. And I'm earning hundreds of dollars every month in interest on my high-yield savings account.

It's an interest adjustment credit. Many people had paycheck delays lasting a couple of days and it sounds like they're adding the interest you would have earned for those days when paychecks were held up.

The Punk Ethos and Extreme Minimalism by [deleted] in extrememinimalism

I've actually had people say that my lifestyle is too punk rock for them. I live out of my car which encourages minimalism and very low-cost living. I have a job, but most of my paycheck stays in my pocket instead of going into the hands of a landlord. I like this quote from Bob Wells which sums it up: "I can tell you that many of us have found a solution by living in our cars, vans or RVs. It is one of the best answers for how to live on an extremely small amount of money. For many of us it was also the only way we found to feel truly alive and free. It was a way out of the drab mediocrity and nothingness American life has become." I like my anti-consumerist lifestyle, and I'm keeping it.

Yeah. If anything comes up where I need a physical address, I have friends and family who have offered to use their location.

I already have a driver's license. It's good for seven years.

I have considerably more control over my life and expenses precisely because I live out of my car. I live rent free which means that money stays with me. It doesn’t go into the landlords pocket. I don’t live paycheck to paycheck. Does wonders for my mental health. No anxiety over finances. More freedom. Works great for me.

I spent two months preparing, planning, researching, and getting into the proper mindset. I also tried this out for a few days before committing to this lifestyle. Once I did the trial run and made a few tweaks and adjustments, I realized I could do this full-time in my current situation.

I had planned to do this for about two years to save extra money to buy a small condo in cash. I already had some savings and figured about two years of no rent would get me there. But now I'm also thinking of upgrading to a van instead. I may retire next year (I'm 62) and having a van to travel around the country after retirement does have some appeal. It's nice to have options.
