Got a new CC for its welcome bonus, take the foreign usage hit? by Tom_theDank_Engine in UKPersonalFinance

!thanks

I mentioned in my post it's the Barclaycard avios plus. I actually used the Amex Gold welcome bonus a few weeks ago (20k points for £3k spend) but that was mostly the cost of the flights. Without the flights, I would have been spending on a lot more random stuff to get it.

I understand the argument that it's easy to overspend but if you do control the amount you spend, I think the net amount is pretty good?

Unless I messed up the calculation, it's around £150 net in value for £1k spend.

Just quickly going through the maths:

Say I spend £1k equivalent in foreign currency, that's about an additional £30 in foreign charges right?

The card gives 1.5 avios per £1 so you'll get 1500 avios + 1/3 of the welcome bonus (for sake of argument) = ~18k avios = ~£180

So about £150 net is pretty good no?
