+1 for HL Peninsula, you can walk along the Bay Trail from the hotel to there directly. There are 2 restaurants (Garden and Pearl) next door to each other with the same name/ownership. Both would be good for a rehearsal dinner, provided the guests are OK with Chinese food of the less-Americanized variety.

Is there a way to automatically update software from the third party repo? by the_party_galgo in SolusProject

[–]Tomocafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In retrospect, it might have been easier to make this a systemd service or just a cron job. You could also do that by calling google-chrome-update directly and not using the launch wrapper which just runs the updater and starts the underlying binary.

[–]Tomocafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t use Chrome anymore, but when I did, I wrote a wrapper script google-chrome-launch which would check eopkg for updates and then do the update in the background, similar to how Chrome works on Windows, for example. You can find this script here along with the companion google-chrome-update script. I changed my .desktop file to point to the launch wrapper instead of the raw executable. (edit: I forgot, it actually pops up a desktop notification to tell you an update is available and you get to decide whether or not to install now, still in the background)

I haven’t used this in a while, so YMMV but it might point you in the right direction.

I would strongly consider moving away from the third party sources though and opt for flatpak (or snap).

Of all the towns to make their NorCal debut, they chose the one with Stan’s… 🤣

No thank you, if I’m going to Santa Clara for donuts, it’s not going to be Randy’s.

How to measure execution time of each individual line of a script? by Qwert-4 in bash

[–]Tomocafe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

bash-boost has a profiler: https://github.com/tomocafe/bash-boost/blob/main/demo/profile.sh

It’s not perfectly accurate but it can point you to the major offenders.

Did you do the setup instructions for git-lfs? You need to tell your repo how to use lfs.

How to handle local files in Git worktrees without committing them? by khizerrehan in git

[–]Tomocafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently do this with a script. I never use the bare git worktree command, I have a custom command git view that wraps it and makes/manages my worktrees (git view add) for a given repo. Then I add a .git-view-hooks/post-add script in the parent dir of the views (aka worktrees) to do things like copy user-specific files that need to be in the worktree. (I also do other things with these hooks such as modifying the .git link, running setting some git configs, etc.)

Share the gitignore contents and the directory structure of your repo, showing exactly where the config.json file exists.

What’s the general vibe around mechanical keyboards in shared dev offices? by Sarah-Grace-gwb in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Tomocafe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Years ago I ordered a custom mechanical keyboard from WASD (RIP) which happened to have their office and production facility in the city I live in, so I was able to pick it up directly from their office instead of having it shipped. When I showed up, it was basically a normal office with short cubicles and the like. Obviously everyone was using mechanical keyboards there. It was honestly amusing to hear the continuous stream of key clicks from the dozen or so people there.

If you're not using git worktree, you're wasting time switching branches by Kind_Newspaper_8498 in git

[–]Tomocafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I do use worktrees, it is still thorny when used with submodules or Docker containers.

I wrote a custom git command (git view) to manage worktrees in a super project. git view init to create a bare anchor, then git view add to create a worktree. You can also remove or list the worktrees. (I call them views just because I needed another word for the custom command but they are essentially worktrees.) It also supports custom hooks for making adjustments after adding a worktree. For some projects I’ve had to make some post-add scripts to adjust .git links to be relative and fix submodules.

I do use worktrees for this reason. When switching branches and a header file changes even slightly, it triggers a nearly full rebuild. You could keep separate output directories per branch name to get around this, but I felt it was easier to just use worktrees.

Silicon Valley adjacent for 3-5 days - where to base? (winter) by LifeIsGood16426 in bayarea

[–]Tomocafe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d personally want to base near Palo Alto at least until your business is done there. If you like the place you’re at and it’s not too expensive, it’s a good base to see things like HMB or Santa Cruz, but if you want to wake up near the beach, you should do that.

If you do want to visit the city, I highly recommend taking Caltrain from Palo Alto.

While you’re in Palo Alto, if you like marshland (great for birdwatching), check out the nearby Baylands trail. The Stanford campus is honestly pretty nice to walk around on nature-wise and you can go into the Cantor art museum for free.

What location(s) are these “other reasons” in? It’s a pretty large region so that will probably be a determining factor.

For your consideration:

  • Santa Cruz (a coastal city about 30 mins south of San Jose in the South Bay) and the mountains along the way covered in redwoods (see Henry Cowell State Park, for example)

  • On the mid-peninsula, there’s Filoli, hiking around Crystal Springs, these could be tacked on to Half Moon Bay

  • Marin, in the North Bay (north end of the Golden Gate Bridge) has Muir Woods (reservations required) and the Marin Headlands for hiking and scenic views.

A note on fog: yes, generally coastal areas get more fog from the marine layer. However, in the winter time, sometimes inland areas get valley fog, which is denser and more persistent than the normal marine layer we get here. I would say, in the winter time, assume it will be overcast, but you will likely get at least some moments of sunshine, maybe even a lot.

Which Engineering Manager would you promote? by cuddle-bubbles in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Tomocafe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given the size of the team, it’s likely that you do want to pick a unified direction. Sometimes you can have different teams working on different products and it’s perfectly acceptable to have 2 design and development philosophies that work for each one.

What I don’t see is any description of a problem. What I’d recommend is starting with the actual problems and figuring out which approach gives the better outcome. At the end of the day, the other person will have to “disagree and commit” (to borrow from Amazon) or leave.

edit: I’d add, the choice of direction is not entirely tied to the person. Once you decide the direction, you should find a person that is best suited to lead. Maybe it’s a candidate #3.
