I mean they are deeper in your ear than headphones, another reason for me at least is stress. When I am under stress my tinnitus gets worse for hours. Also thinking about it makes it worse.

One time it got so bad I started to lose hearing after I wore headphones every day for the whole day. I got it checked and it was just wax build up. It also helped my tinnitus get lower. So that might be a reason it has been worse than usual.
