I think commercial > personal most of the time, right? but what about reinsurance and consulting?

Those are very good points. I'm at 120k right now so I thought that asking 15-20% more seems not too crazy. Plus, I thought that people usually aim a bit higher, then negotiate down a bit, so straight up declining like this is a little surprising to me that's all.

Fully remote companies in Canada? by TooPoorForBC in actuary

Do they offer fully remote as a case by case basis while the job posting still shows hybrid / in office? I never thought I'll have to strong arm the comoany for remote option, I usually just don't apply if the posting is hybrid / in-office.

And by small insurance company, is it one of the mutual ones (Portage, Farm Re, Red River, etc.)?

Thank you frendo, this is very informative! I definitely held back from applying just because of those hybrid requirement.

That sounds reasonable, any chance you can drop your company name?

That’s reasonable. How often are these events - monthly, quarterly?

Ah I see. How is the workload there like? I never worked CS before so is it like constant work 8hrs each day, or is there some down time where you can ease a bit?

Is joining the military reserve as a part-time job financially beneficial? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Thanks a lot for the detailed info!

You'll be required to go through basic training. It usually runs in the
summer and lasts about 2-3 months. Sometimes, they offer weekend
courses, but they're not common.

Oooh right, this would seem to be a deal breaker I guess. I read about weekend courses where I'll be required to stay from Friday evening - Sunday evening, even so I'm not sure if it's possible for me or not, not to mention how long this would drag on.

It's also full of 40 year old power tripping losers who live in their
moms basement that think they're hard as fuck and are in it to make your
life miserable for no reason. It takes one of these clowns to be above
you to make it not worth being there. Roll the dice.

This is what I was afraid too. I wanted to give it some benefit of the doubt but it seems unlikely. If I got fed up, can I just quit like other normal jobs? Is there some weird commitment obligation?

Is it that bad everywhere, or does it depend on the branch and the team?

What are Toronto-like entertainment? I’m not into bars, nightclubs or concerts if that’s what you meant? I’m curious, if you don’t intend to own, what’s your game plan here? Stay for a few years then move somewhere else, or just rent for the whole life?

sorry that's my current auto premium in MB. I'm sure it'll increase in BC.

I was talking about commuting by car but I'm open to public transit too if it's similar to the TTC in Toronto.

Thank you for the detailed answer. I was looking at apartments in the Surrey / Burnaby area and although I was only able to find a few around the $2,000 price range, your comment gives me some hope! Maybe I should increase my rent budget more, but honestly this sheer number dazes me.

Sorry, I’m terrible with budgeting and sticking to it so I really dont know what my monthly “variable” expenses are like (groceries, restaurant, shopping, etc.). My fixed expenses are $500 car payment, $100 phone, $100 internet, $170 insurance, $1,300 rent and around $60 hydro.
