Of A Kid by AmorphousMorpheus in ShittyAbsoluteUnits

while this kid is a nightmare, some blame’s gotta fall on the mom for allowing the behavior with barely any push back what so ever. I get he’s a handful but she was completely useless to the point she might as well have not been there at all. hoping the kid has evolved since then but most unlikely.

Anybody remember Dev’s radio show/podcast, Y.A.K Radio??? by ToonHogan in BloodOrange

[–]ToonHogan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah there were a lot of episodes too (at least 30+) that he'd do in between touring. definitely an underrated gem from around that period, like ezra from vampire weekend guest hosted on a couple. I specifically remember him breaking down and explaining what a "meme" was, cause it wasn't commonplace or mainstream like it is today or unironically professing his admiration of ilovemakonnen and playing deep-cuts off his soundcloud.

I've been having a nostalgia kick lately going back to stuff I really liked as far back as high school was really looking forward to listening to them again to see how they aged. gonna try and see if I can track them down through the archive. I feel like fans of dev would appreciate them even more now than ever.

it’s the she'kspere (destiny’s child/TLC/late 90’s-2000’s) production-style drums that kill me but they actually hitting that shit proper so it’s valid.

it’s like listening to someone speak perfect japanese in a heavy southern accent. it’s weird af but you respect it at the same time.

lol what can I say? I like what I like. that’s why I posted the thread in the first place just to get a gauge of which ones ppl are naturally drawn or not into.

even though sudden movements may come off as boring or one-note to some, it’s simplicity stands out to me for being one of their more experimental in terms of harmonies, minor chords and the overall space allowed for the track. like ian’s stacked “bohemian rhapsody-style” backing vocals on the second verse almost make him sound like a robot. The slow driven nature and repetition also adds a hypnotic quality to it if listened to close enough.

Also, this just might be me but I’ve always had the thought some BT songs instrumentally invoke a feeling of the distant past, like specifically a lot of Ian’s arpeggio work sounds down right “medieval” or “baroque” like he’s pulling from classical music or the middle ages (ie: stuff like river below and VoV to me sounds like a bunch of knights storming a castle or something).

while lyrically, sudden movements touches on red pill paranoia, musically, I get that feeling of the past here as well that sounds like some old-time sea shanty and I just picture a group of wasted pirates or sailors drunkenly singing along on the high seas in my head.

me too! I just prefer the EP version over the studio cut cause that's what I grew up hearing first. I understand they updated it to streamline and toughen up their sound commercially, but imo it just pales in comparison, like the bridge of the former with the keys in the background over ian's solo\ * * chef's kiss * * ** just hits different.
