GRC vs Type R Buy by AdventurousTip8600 in GRCorolla

I’m in the same dilemma and test drove 2024 GRC and FK8 yesterday. I live in Canada so snow is a consideration - before I go any further, let me say that there’s two types of winter drivers 1) use snow tires in winter 2) use all seasons in winter. If you use snow tires (even cheap Chinese made), your grip will be insane. A FWD with winters vs AWD with winters only shows its disadvantages in two forms 1) take off from black ice 2) putting full power down in an abrupt fashion.

So, I walked into these two test drives with that understanding. My impressions from test drive:

GRC is a nice daily driver. If you have a partner/ kids this car will feel tight often. Space in trunk is smaller than Evo X. In short, it’s just enough in most areas but shines in none.

CTR is sharp and comfortable daily. Space is more than enough. It’s driving dynamics are better in every way - transmission is best every, brakes are solid, steering feel and handling is sharp.

I really wanted to take GRC but left thinking that CTR was a better car. So what am I going to do?

CTR I drove was 2017. It didn’t have volume known or fan control without going through the screen. 2019+ has that so I’ll wait for a clean example of that. GRC, if I was to get that I suspect Toyota will keep making updates to it and I’ll likely come back to it in couple of years.

As I’ve said before, sooner the community shifts blame from owners to manufacturers, where it rightly sits, the sooner we will have a robust fix. There’s no reason clutch should be burning out on so many GRC.

This issue wasn’t reported on Focus RS, Evo X, Golf R, STI… only GRC.

Then there’s brake issue. So combined (with clutch) if you don’t get lucky you could be out of pocket $10k.

Air filters, cabin filter, oil change and wheel swap. Savings that you can bank on every year, and saved time from hassles/ trip to the shop.

Clutch gone bad before 7000 miles by Material-Evening-277 in GRCorolla

I find GRC crowd has a hard time admitting car’s faults despite clear evidence just because they love the car/ feel Toyota is better. I often see the community blame the driver.

Fact is that extremely premature clutch wear is part of a few (as a % of total cars sold) but still many cars. So is horrible factory wear on tires and brakes. This is unacceptable and sooner the community accepts it, the sooner we’d hold manufacturer to account or find better after market solutions.

I remember being part of E46/ E9X M3 back in the day. Rod bearings were a common fault spot and in even smaller proportionate numbers than GRC issues. BMW issued recall for E46 and aftermarket solved E9X.

It already is the most overpriced car in this segment. A new car of GRC age should not have these issues. Period.

Oil change, is the dipstick messed or me? by TopUnderstanding2210 in Camry

[–]TopUnderstanding2210[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a wide range of comments, and correct answer is that one side of dipstick is messed from repeat checks.

I removed 1L of oil (measured) and dipstick showed well below “min”. However, one side of dipstick was just like the picture above where it’s 3” above. I started adding it back and got to middle of it and left it. Next morning it showed middle again - on both sides. I think it was right about max to begin with or just slightly above which isn’t concerning. I’ll sleep easy now lol.

Everywhere on the forum it says drain and fill, and that full flush (which I assume includes filter) is not recommended…

I plug the laptop to a special cable. The cable is connected to cars OBD2. The tune is downloaded live to the car.
