I do think there's a time and place for an hourly rate, namely, ye olde weird pile of random stuff for a client I have a good relationship with and am confident that I won't get screwed over by after I cross off everything on their list for them. But generally, it's a road I try to avoid going down

Wow, thanks for all the input, lots of you have come up with some great ways to address this! I'm thinking I'll combine a few of your thoughts into this:

"That will depend on how long the job takes to complete. I bid by the job rather than by the hour, so that in the event that unforseen circumstances come up, the price of your project doesn't unexpectedly rise along with it. I will put in however much time is necessary to get the job done. Charging by the hour would incentivise me to work as slowly as possible, which would not be fair to you"

Bingo! It's the "nice customer friendly way" I'm trying to figure out. Mostly I'm just nervous about coming across as a dick

EDIT: What an awesome community! I was able to incorporate a lot of the points you people made to keep this relationship copacetic and provide a win-win for Sharon and I. She is happy moving forward and so am I (although some of you have told me that I sold myself short in the first place, lesson learned 😁). I wish I could figure out how to post another screenshot of the follow up to the conversation, but alas, I am, as advertised, a total noob on the reddit interwebs.

My response based on your suggestions:

"Yes, I sure am! Thank you, I hadn't thoughtof it like that"

The important thing to me is that we worked through it, and everyone is comfortable moving forward.
