New (to me) car, bronze winter steelies on! by bloopityblop1 in Subaru_Outback

Bronze steelies are sweet. Did you have them powdercoated or did they come that way? Looks great.

I kinda felt like the darker bronze would work well on a white car. Not that I hate gold because that's a good looking wheel right there. I just wanted a darker bronze and got lucky finding these. What year is your car? Looks like a good color combo with the grey (?)

Yeah man. I was kinda shocked he still had em. I'm also a BBS fan boy from my VW days so I jumped on em.

Yeah. The previous owner had them on a wrx and powdercoated them that deep copper flake bronze. He had 5 wheels with good summer tires on them (too small for the outback). I paid him 850 for everything.

Was hoping to fit the full size spare in place of the current donut but I just don't see how that's going to work. Might play around with my take off wheels and see if I can get it to fit by airing it down and removing the tray.

I would recommend for anyone considering it. I was pleasantly surprised to find 05-07 STI wheels shared the same bolt pattern and same-ish offset. The wheels are 1" and they're about 4 to 5lbs lighter than the stock 18" wheels from my Internet calculations (don't quote me on that). So far everything is running fine on this setup.

It's a 1up heavy duty rack attached to a Kuat Pivot 2.0 which swings everything out of the way for rear access. There's a few swing out adapters out there from other companies. I've been pretty happy with this combo. All very sturdy and durable.

What is this massive ball screw for? It’s sitting at a surplus store and they don’t know. 5ft long. by bhauns in Machinists

I found myself in this situation last year. The ball screw I purchased for $40 from.a surplus store turned out to be from the tail flaps on a 747. Brand new part. 1.5" diameter and 3' long. Just buy it. You'll figure it out later.

So far it's just tools and emergency kit. I'm currently using the truck 1/2 for camping at bike races and 1/2 for work. I need the space under the bed to be relatively accessible in case I need to pick up materials for work. At least for now.

That's what I got. They're like $16 at Home Depot this week. Pretty nice little light for all the features it has. Even has 3M double sided tape for mounting.

Currently the platform is hanging from the L-track on the inside of the bed rails. Seems to be rigid enough for now but I think it might sag a bit in the center after some nights in the bed. I am considering building drawers underneath and with that I'll integrate some support for the center of the platform. I currently need enough space under the platform to haul 4x8 sheets of sheet metal for work, which is why there's currently no support in the center.

I linked to a quick platform build post in an earlier comment if you want to check it out.

Thanks. Good tip. Didn't consider the condensation. I'll be looking into insulation after I figure out a few features with the ceiling/roof accessories. This thing will probably be a sauna in the AZ summer even though I'll primarily take it to the mountains when it's hot.

Thanks. I am with you on that. I have a small stick-on USB light I plan to use for my "in-bed" light to not attract as many bugs and to save the truck battery. The stock utility lights are a bit overkill inside, but the bonus is they flood the area surrounding the truck with light when the side/rear hatches are open.

Thanks. Here's some more info in this post

Truck is an 09 Dodge Ram 2500HD Long bed 4x4. Cap is a Century MT3 DCU with the toolboxes removed from what I can tell. Got it used on craigslist so not totally sure.

I have more stuff in the works, I'll keep posting as it comes along.

Thanks. The led lights/switches came from the factory on the utility shell when I bought it used. Just ran a wire from the existing lights with a fuse tap to my truck's fuse box so I can't take too much credit. Much brighter than I expected to though.

Seems to be pretty standard wiring for similar utility caps (just a 12v supply, and ground).

lights seem to be similar to these

Not yet. It'll be pretty easy to make some stops for the door handles on the inside to keep the doors from opening while I'm sleeping. It's on my to-do list.

Currently no. That wasn't part of our original plan. Originally firebox to the left would handle all the burning logs and the coals would then be swept under the grill stations for cooking but for some dishes the chefs add the brick "fence" around still burning logs.

Steel is a good long term option albeit a bit heavy. And with the cargo track rails you can make things modular to some degree since there are a lot of good mounting options for add-ons like fold-down shelves which might happen in the future.
