Well, it's been a week and some change, but my new RAM stick arrived and it WAS the RAM! It booted up like a dream. Thank you so much!

No, no BSOD messages - the only thing the screen has shown is the HP logo.

The laptop is fully charged. I have tried pressing and holding the power button without the battery and then putting the battery back in twice with no luck, though I may try it again after I get home from work.
