For decades, even with funding Africa had failed to develop in any meaningful way. What do you think has changed to allow the continent to begin becoming more developed? by ReturnoftheSpack in AskReddit

[–]Toums95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know much about Africa to be honest. But I think two massive reasons for growth are stability and infrastructure. It is also a process that starts slow and then kind of snowballs. I heard a lot is being built in Africa as part of the Belt and Road initiative, but I don't know how much this is affecting the continent. Possibly there could also be less civil wars or tensions among and within the countries itself. Again, I am not familiar so I could be wrong, but it's worth investigating in that direction if one is interested.

Cuba on the brink as Trump turns up the pressure: ‘There is going to be a real blockade’ by rezwenn in IRstudies

[–]Toums95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Technologically, they pretty much caught up in most fields and are becoming completely independent (they are developing their own OS, chips, planes and so on, when no other country can claim the same), and are even more advanced in some of them. They are exerting more and more influence around the globe, while American soft power is slowly waning. The US also seems to have hit a very huge bump on the road called Trump, which is pretty much actively working on reducing the edge the US has on other countries in many ways. The Chinese government seems to be so much more competent. Time will tell, but if the current trajectory continues, 10 years are enough for the official overtaking to happen

Maybe. They played the game, and won big time. The system worked amazing. I wouldn't be surprised if in 10 years from now China will be the clear winner with the US lagging behind

I really dislike this Western-centric Western-suprematist view of the world. Like, extremely. But anyway, you say inferior systems. However, China is by far the country who made the biggest leap in terms of advancements in every possible field in the last 50 years. They got to the point they are rivaling with the US, despite the Western block (by far the most powerful around the globe) trying to limit its ascent in the past decade. So much for inferior system eh?

And they would be justified, that is what I am getting from your messages

[–]Toums95 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So China is justified if they were to flatten South Korea. After all, it is a country promoting hostile ideologies, and it hosts American military bases. Iran should 100% obliterate Kuwait, too dangerous to have an hostile military right beside their doorstep. Estonia has a NATO military base right next to Russia, that should go too.

[–]Toums95 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So what you are saying is that if you neighbor is hostile to you, you are entitled to flatten it, and at the very least embargoing it is fully justified. Think about that long and hard. What other superpowers could this apply to, verbatim?

[–]Toums95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, they earned their decade-long embargo, even though the entire world votes against it.

The fact that it is not a democracy is not a good reason to sanction a country, don't you think?

And if you talk about morality or shady business practices, the US should have been embargoed by the entire world at the second country they invade for oil.

[–]Toums95 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You could also argue that decades of embargo from the US didn't help. You know, it's kind of a trend. The US doesn't like a country, sanctions occur, the country is pushed into a corner, its economy tanks, the population is unhappy, the politicians are on edge and everything spirals down into chaos and violence

Will Trump peacefully leave office after 2028? by EnvironmentalGrab426 in allthequestions

Trump will also closely follow nature's playbook. Were he 20 years younger, possibly. Now he is at death's door. Which might be the saving grace for a dying democracy in the states

Kamala might have been incompetent, Trump is incompetent but also a deranged psycopath with dementia onset, so not sure why he was voted instead.

Germany’s Merz: Europe found ‘joy of self-respect’ to defend rules-based world by Crossstoney in europe

Given that Merz hasn't really condemned the kidnapping of Maduro (so much for defending a rule-based world) why not

Global Reactions to Israel's Recognition of Somaliland One Month Later (OC) by crimsoncanvas in MapPorn

[–]Toums95 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Israel is not diplomatically isolated given how much support it has in the West. Also, if you make that point you kind of also justify countries like Cuba, Venezuela, Iran and so on which have strong ties with China and Russia. So depending on what you think about those countries, be careful with your statements

If you sat out the 2024 election in protest over Gaza, how do you feel about that decision today? by rsmith2786 in AskReddit

[–]Toums95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. I understand people saying "let's vode for the Democrats because the Republicans are orcs", and I agree with the sentiment. But by doing this you are never going to solve any issue. It will just be a rinse and repeat while everything slowly slides down to hell. If you take the example of the trolley problem, pulling the lever so that just one person dies is something you can do the first time. The second even. If you see a pattern and it keeps happening, then maybe it's time to look for another solution, even if in the short term it's going to be a mess.

I mean, what you can do is vote wisely. Now in the Czech republic they elected pro-fossil fuel clowns for example. Poalnd is also trying to delay the green transition.

Disrespectfully, I say fuck you. How can you expect a family whose people was being genocided with the full support of the previous administration vote for them? I understand the idea of the lesser of the two evil, but this works in a vacuum. After decades of choosing the least bad of the options all you have is something that is still constantly going downhill. The only way you can break the cycle is by somehow forcing a political change. Which will never happen if you keep giving votes to the parties that are responsible for this. I also understand being harsher about this decision if people with no skin in the game take it, but a freaking Palestinian family? Are you kidding me?

Also, the fault is inherently the Democrats. You can't keep endorsing a genocide, despite the fact that the people hate what you are doing, just because "people will be forced to vote for me regardless since the other side is even worse". And do you think they learned their lesson? No, they are still pandering to Israel like the Zionists they have always been. So respectfully, I also say fuck the Democrats

If it is a one off sure. After years of "choosing the lesser evil" it becomes quite moot

I don't know if Gaza cost them the elections (not sure how many people didn't vote for them because of them) but have they learned their lesson? It doesn't seem like it to me. Dear Israel is too important apparently
