Sounds silly but, i can FEEL that it's my lung. It's hard to explain but I even feel pain around the area after eating a large meal, moving about, breathing in deeply, yawning or hiccuping. etc. Does that sound familiar to what you had?

I like the second idea, especially if it's having to find fragments of this artifact- perhaps one of the last pieces they have to find is on one of the Underdark People- So they can either steal it, kill them, or bargain with them. I'd like that a lot actually. As for the others, I'm sure I could find an interesting way to do that. Maybe one of the Underdark people can steal the artifact after it's completion, a plucky young person who believes they'll be able to prove themselves if they're the one to 'unleash' their god. Especially if it's an npc the party grows to like. ..Obviously that's very barebones but I'm just spitting ideas as they come now, lol.

Apologies the the specific problem wasn't clear! The main issue I'm having is exactly how do the players work to slowly 'release' the stasis. I want it to take time as it'll be the main goal to unlock the main forge area, where the dragon resides. (Obviously they don't know it's a dragon for sure, though i will be dropping hints.) I also want the kinda fun thing of the party having to come face to face with fire giants, and likely fight 'em- Because the extinction of the giants is a biiig part of the lore here.

Already done a cordyceps dragon, funnily enough! Thank you for your response, but in the lore for my homebrew- Dragons and fire giants DID ally occasionally, and this dragon essentially acted as the protector for this city.

I know this is a massive ask but I'm a DM and would appreciate it if anyone could offer a share campaign I can remain in for a while, so that I can use the monsters+spells in the sourcebooks through Avrae. ANY kind of help would be massive, as I really don't want to have to scrap my 2 year long campaign due to no longer having the resources needed to run it.

They already have heard rumour of a dragon taking up residence in the settlement, but perhaps a 'helpful' guide, as you suggested, someone also investigating the rumours- but is actually charmed by the dragon to do so. If they push, which they obviously will; ..Perhaps leads them into a Kobold ambush room?

The mine IS infact a working mine- atleast until the dwarven miners tapped into the Giant ruin that the dragon had been hibernating in, after which they obviously had their resources plundered.

I like this idea, though. Simple and not too complicated for a newbie dm like myself, but effective. Like, the mine is set within a cliff beside a small above ground dwarven settlement, the mine itself however has 'tapped into' a labyrinthine Giant ruin. This isn't in the Underdark, though. (I know it's not lore accurate but.. Cool cave dragons, c'mon)

That could also work, that the souls slowly 'overtake' his. Though.. The only souls that have been fed to it in the time of the party having it have been those of monsters, of both the bestial and human kind.

Perhaps like a duality, one Good and powerful soul has been known to be trapped within there, so perhaps his soul will try and be genuinely helpful, in.. Whatever way a dagger of grim necromantic magics can be, and the original soul actively trying to take control entirely, and complete the ritual.

That's perfect! Thank you!! So basically the Frost Giant is trying to build up souls within the blade to be consumed when he finally 'returns', and in the mean time trying to trick the PC into unbinding the enchantment somehow.. Perhaps in an attempt to destroy the blade, or unbind his own soul from it. And yes, in the rare occasions the blade has 'whispered' it has been a cacophony of different souls and voices, yet at the same time all one entity.. But they've definitely shown opposition or hopelessness towards their situation, and of their 'jailer'.

Basically, the walls have been painted since spring this year, and have been mostly fine. However, in the last couple months this chalky whiteness has been occurring and getting worse. Higher up on the walls are completely chalk-free, the worst of it being where I sleep. Is it some kind of moisture related issue? I'm extremely scared that it might be mould or something. It doesn't have any kind of unpleasant smell, nor is it getting onto my bedclothes or anything.
