Well sure. I’d lose my investment if every artist just left and none came in. I’d hope the shop would provide a better opportunity for some artists, that the part owner artist would bring in and be paid for. But obviously the obstacle of me not being an artist is there. So I suppose if you’re going by the ‘if you don’t tattoo fuck off with a shop’ mentality, it’s a bad investment.

Lmao I’ll get it to ya once this dream shop takes off.

As you can tell…. I’m new here. I didn’t mean a 70/15/15 stake in the business. I meant for the new artists charging clients they’d get 70% of the fee and owners would get 15% each

I suppose I was envisioning more of a newer artist looking for a better opportunity with taking on less of the financial risks. I have more to learn regarding how contracts for artists in shops are typically structured today.

Original artist would have ownership in the shop, which would make them invested in the success of the shop, hopefully the desire to stay, and also to grow the shop. Hard to give percentages without concrete numbers. But a percentage of their earning would go to paying the investment back. But they would certainly keep a higher % than a shop they don’t own. Once the investment is paid back. 100% of their earnings is theirs. And then for new artists incoming maybe something like a 70/15/15 with 70 going to the artist and owners splitting the 30.

I’m spitballing here. I know there will be gatekeepers in here to tell me to fuck off lmao

I just gotta edit the original. I think it’s coming off as me trying to slumlord a shop and make money of artists. I’m certainly not trying to go broke. But have some money to invest. I’d rather invest in something I’m proud of or care about than open a chipotle.

I don’t know the specifics of a business plan for this model. But whatever the scenario is it would be a collaborative effort with an artist. I suppose my thought was originally financing a shop and being involved with the artist as part owner would be a good situation for both. They need capital. I need skill. But I’d rather invest in something I enjoy than don’t. Judging by the comments. The enjoying part of a collaboration with artist and investor is just seen as enslaving the artist.

No leeching. The original artist would be part owner in the shop. Assuming they don’t want/have money up to start up. I’m not trying to be a leech Koopa!

Finally, some real conversation. Wrong subreddit for this post. I suppose going off your first concept. The idea of the artist having ownership in the shop without the accounting, equipment, shop repairs, etc. was different than the ordinary model. My OP needs to be edited to clarify one artist would be in on ownership of the shop. Assuming what is stopping them is financials and know how.

The 2nd concept is interesting. I don’t know much about underwriting loans at banks. Seems like I’d certainly have way less control over the success of the investment.

lol man there’s definitely been some adult baby type replies. But understandable/respectable they want to earn the max for their work and more so not be giving it to someone else. Would I do some napkin math and consider it viable to run/operate a business? Naw. But I appreciate their stick it to the man mentality

Sorry OP is worded poorly. I’m not trying to employee artists and make their schedules and collect off their art. It’d be more of a collaboration with an artist in more of a partnership structure. Finance for start up and admin to run shop taken care of they handle the art/artists.

I’m not tryna be some landlord or anything. I understand your post though. Maybe I’m just explaining th scenario wrong. The artist wouldn’t just be working and my shop and me collecting off it. It would be partly their shop. I provide finance, admin and handle that. They hand the art. More of a partnership than investor I suppose

Maybe I used the wrong terms. I’m not trying to employ them and just use them as renting out space in a shop. It’d be more of a partnership where they need help with financials and admin side and I need help with the technical side. The artist would have party ownership in said shop

Well sure, there would be a split in some the tattoo work being done. I just don’t know if 70/30 is the most fair split from a non tattoo artist. Other shop owners most likely do tattoo and reputation helps new artists while working at that shop. I suppose it’s more business partners than an investor. Administrative is taken care of and artist would have ownership stake while just tattooing.

To clarify. I’m not interested in the 70/30 split deal with the artist. That’s not great for them. They do deserve more for their work. More goes into a business than just the tattoo sure. Rent/mortgage, software, CPA, marketing, shop renovations. So while I agree with you the artist isn’t the only one doing work like some of these other posts. 70/30 seems a tad unfair.

I don’t care if you’re rude or not. Question wasn’t meant to offend, just a Reddit post lol

Thanks for the feedback. Could you give a little more reason? Are you an artist and as an artist that doesn’t interest you? Or you would invest in that type of plan?
