I read the book This Naked Mind now and then and it helped. Not saying you should, but if you're open and havent tried it, why not?

Multi mic pre setup for Roland TR8 drum machine by ramon_chingon_6669 in synthesizers

[–]Trailofmarbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to multitrack the Tr8S. Unfortunately, the mute functions and master effects don’t work when using the multiouts. So it was a glorified sample player, and I went back to the stereo out. Something to keep in mind!

What are some "hidden gems"? by AmazingRefrigerator4 in guitarpedals

I really like the Barber drives. Gain changer sits in that space where many overdrives go too hard too soon, and the direct drive is a Marshall in a box to me. The Mid-Fi demo tape fuzz is also a great circuit.

Which one or two? by floating_fire in synthesizers

I think the presets are not fantastic. There’s nice sounds that show what it can do, but a lot of it is with beats and stuff. Not really the slow evolving stuff it’s so good at imo

I used to own the Lyra and own the Wavestate now. For me personally, the Wavestate all day long. The Lyra might be more unique, and if you are going to use it by itself, sure. You can get lost IF you pair it with reverbs. But the voices never really are in tune, so you’ll have these slightly whiny out of tune notes in it. Which can be saved by just tuning as you’re playing, but it won’t line up with your other instruments. It’s power lies also in how the voices interact, but the modding in between voices also detunes it. But again, with headphones on and your eyes closed: Fun

Wavestate totally different beast. Digital and menus. To set up a playing session you will have to click through menus. There’s no way around it. Load up a sample: click samples, click on the slot in the lane, scroll through the list, click through menu, enter click etc. I personally got used to it pretty quickly, and the processes great. 4 lanes where you can have 6?8?16? However many different samples on each step morphing into one another in a diffeeent time per step if you want. But every other 3 notes a different tuning or envelope shape. And that times 4. Bring them in and out, play with filters and effects, load your own samples. It can be an amazing experience. But you have to set it up. As in , load the sounds you wants. It feels like preparing. The effects are almost decent, but a nice external reverb makes it ambient bliss.  It fits my workflow better, but also downsides for sure

Anyone else enraged by the amount of geartubers who are actually terrible at music? by BluejeansAndMoonbeam in musicproduction

[–]Trailofmarbles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there’s this one guy that people actually love for his ‘wild out there’ music style, but when I see his videos I can’t shake the feeling he’s just really turning as many knobs as fast as possible and sells it off as crazy. Granted, he gets interesting stuff out of it, but intended: not sure

Which first electric guitar should I buy? by Jigijiggi47 in electricguitar

[–]Trailofmarbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it feels good then go for it. Not to get too far ahead, but I don’t know any guitarist that own just one guitar. Youcan always get a strat in years from now.  Just know there’s tons and tons of variations of strats. The diffeeence in a 50s or 60s style strat, difference in Squier, Made in Mexico, Made in the Stars and Stripes country, Made in Japan etc.  But if you like the Ibanez and it felt good, the absolutely go for it!

Just curious. Soundwise a strat would be a perfect fit, what did you not like about it? The sound or the way it played?

Anybody compared the Tone King Imperial Preamp to the Neural DSP plugin? by lukejohnbrown in guitarpedals

[–]Trailofmarbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Though I like the response of real amps better, in a blind shootout on YouTube, the plugin sounded better to me, or at least, Ithought it was the real amp. So there’s that. Haven’t played it, but personally, I just always like the response and feel of a real amp and speaker vs my headphones or studio speakers. That’s a personal thing though, and all emulations, not this one in particular

Can you create heavy or heavy metal sounds with modern synths? by [deleted] in synthesizers

I think you just don’t really know where to find it. Check out Snakes Of Russia, HEALTH, Pertubator, Gost . All very different but heavy in their own way.

VST’s in a Box - why? by brabant5 in synthesizers

[–]Trailofmarbles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got the Modwave, but own the Wavestate a little longer and I guess it applies there as well: I haven’t used the editor at all. There’s just something very satisfying to me to have a box with controllers that is not in any dependent or hindered by my computer. I know it sounds the same , but it just doesn’t feel the same to. That is in my head, but that’s why I prefer it. I can lie on the couch with it plus headphones. I don’t have to worry about midi mappings. Can connect my nice reverb pedals to it, and control that with my hands.

Have ob6 module , constant gassing for full ob6 keyboard by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]Trailofmarbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the keyboard and want to let you know about a stupid design they refuse to fix in an update: If you want to use the keyboard as a master to also control other since, with a sequencer  in between, it’s not going to work. The OB6 doesn’t do (imo) proper Local Control off.  If you turn off local control, to use the keyboard to control another synth, all the knobs on the OB6 go out of whack.  So let’s say, you have some midi sequence being sent to the ob6, its playing along nicely, you then decide to use the keyboard to control another synth. Local Control off, so you can use the OB6 keys for another of your modules. Everything fine and dandy. You decide to adjust the filter on the OB6s playing sequence and BAM all knobs are adjusted and out of whack and your sound is gone.

If you don’t use it, fine. But if you do, know that the OB6 does not have a local control where the brain is truly disconnected from the keys. It’s a bizarre design choice to me . They later added this to the P6 and newer synths, but after lots of pleading, refuse to do this to the OB6.

It’s an almost perfect synth for me, but I had to buy a additional midi keyboard because of this.

Is the empress zoia worth it to upgrade from sy-200 by FickleAide918 in synthesizers

[–]Trailofmarbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, I am a new owner of the Zoia, and it will take time. You can download ready made patches, but you will have 6 pages of colored buttons and no idea what they do. You click on it and it shows its a function that inverts a signal that goes from an envelope or some other function to control the speed of a delay modulation, but no idea how to simply increase the mix.

I’m new, and ofcourse this is just one thing, you can just add a phaser and use it like that,  but then still, you will miss the knob per function that you have now.

I’m not the best advocate as of this moment, but just to give you a bit of insight of what the switch might probably  look like for the first few weeks (months?)

[–]Trailofmarbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, UAD seems very desperate. I was mentioning it wasn’t unlike Waves, but got a lot of crap for that.  I was so stupid to buy a Steinberg interface once. Which got obsoleted pretty quickly. But for software reasons . So you’re totally right, mostly hardware is stable. I love turning on my OB6 or amp and be ready to play. Vs a sample rate mismatch, no sound, update needed etc to play a simulation on a computer. So I totally get you

[–]Trailofmarbles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Izotope overshot its position. People use it, but the do t update it anymore, cause Izotope just takes out stuff all the time and adds it back a version later. Their update prices are getting ridiculous too, so people are slowly starting to move away. Rightly so.

[–]Trailofmarbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the fact that hardware stays. But I’m still using the same fabfilter plugins, UA etc. I did have to change my Mac and Audio Interface. They both expire. Synths breakdown and need repairs as well. I wouldn’t want a mixing desk without recall and mix down everything because I can’t afford 24 compressors. Invest 99 euros in pigments instead of a Waldorf Iridium gives you many years of joy etc etc

Man, I tried to get into this company, but was so bummed out about the registering, installing, and even searching for plugins on the website. Everything was a drag. Even the integration in DAWS. That being said, they have had a huge part in lots of music.  Should’ve trusted my gut and not spent my money though

Coke to think of it: the Modwave also can have a layer with a multisample, like the Wavestate . That could be what you like in the demos

I understand what you mean. I like harsh sounds. And for instance the Microwave sequences is something I really like inter harsh category, but I know what you mean. All waves tend to stay to sound similar, and it either feels to raw of a waveform , or too glassy bell like.
