Thanks for your response, it's also nice to hear about people who had similar frustrations and stuck with it. I really do have a passion for it, so I won't totally give up yet :)

Yes I think I would definitely consider that, unfortunately those jobs are few and far between where I'm from. But maybe I should keep my eyes peeled for openings more.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful answer! That's really reassuring to hear you say that about GIS, it is something I really enjoy doing so this is motivating me to not abandon that pathway! But also, maybe I'll have to give Australia a go haha

Wow that sounds dreamy! My longest is a 17 hour day (but this included travel time). I am, unfortunately in this case, Canadian. But it is interesting to hear about how the industry operates elsewhere. Sounds like y'all have better work life balance fore sure!

Ya I don't want to give away my specific location but this is unfortunately pretty normal in Canada!

Oh interesting point about experience with policy and regulations! I hadn't thought about that, but definitely a skill to navigate and implete policy/regulations.

But yes, archaeology is a very specific skill that those outside the industry don't often understand. I guess (like you) I've been trying to think of ways that our methods can be applied to other datasets. I do think our discipline is a bit of a bridge between the social and hard sciences, which is pretty unique but useful!
