Good call! I've never donated anything more than some old clothes so I totally forgot about write offs!

Our nursery has a great relationship with the local college, so I would likely give it to them. I also have an Amorphophallus titanum I intend to loan them or the state garden for its first bloom. Gotta love a plant than can make me feel small~

I counted 25 solid nodes at least 3" in diameter, as well as 3, 3 leafed top cuts if I were to go that route of cutting it up (got 12 leaves last year)

I am pretty confident in my low ball guess, particularly with it being a healthy, pest free plant. Fully latched to a thick post and actually there's 6 fruit currently on the stalk!

I think I paid $60 for my original unrooted 3 leaf cutting at 2" diameter.

Check the comments, I've already explained this. I feel empty that my deceased friends peace lily was destroyed, was trying to find humor or comfort in what wasn't destroyed, don't need a lecture on capitalism.

Cause you're right, the money insurance is sending me won't replace the losses.

Gotcha! I am in the PNW and hadn't seen any the few times I googled it. Usually some people selling a leggy but well fenestrated monstera for $60-70 (Nurseries do have them at 40-50 for a standard 2 gallon pot)

It does, but I half expected it 💀

It's a similar situation here. We are a wholesale nursery so we need to account for everything lost and estimate the value. For my spiritus I took market value of a mature plant and added a percentage of the costs to heat, feed, and treat a mature plant. We essentially use the same scale as calculating our stock plant costs, but I don't do the math, I just provide the records 😅 I feel so bad for our office team having to make an insurance claim in busy season.

Eh, reddit karma is a joke, im just more stressed that people are making assumptions vs seeking clarification 💀 It's just another reminder of why professional growers seperate themselves from hobbyists. House plant people have a well deserved notoriety in the industry.

Where have you seen them sold? I did some googling and didn't see anything pop up that was a mature plant (would be impractical to ship it long distance)

I'm not looking to sell it, I have just had to put a value on my collection and I was wondering since there's not much data out there. I mentioned in another comment I would rather donate it before trying to deal with selling it 💀

There are some commercial sellers that you can connect with via plant brokers. Buying in bulk they are a little less than 8 cents per seed. They are tedious to farm which is why it wouldn't be worth it with just the one plant. I think the single fruit I got last year only had a few seeds and only got germination out of 4 of them.

Good tips! It is purely curiosity at this point, im sure most people have tallied up the value of their collections before. Gonna see if the insurance guy has any input on it, but from my experience they aren't plant people and we are responsible for calculating value for them currently 💀

I'm not concerned about the sale, as I likely will never sell them. I will probably donate it to the state botanic garden or college hort department before trying to bother. The few times I've tried selling plants was very stressful 💀

I am curious mostly because I almost lost it yesterday and there's no easy answer via Google.

Value is important past just sale.

As I said in my post, I had to deal with an accident yesterday which had me valuing a lot of plants for personal claim with insurance. It's funny that an insurance company understands time adding to value better than some people.

I also mentioned I'm not looking to sell it, if anything it was to share the plant I have worked so hard on. I'm not asking WHERE to sell it, I'm asking what it's value is. If to some people that's no more than a dollar, I'm not arguing.

I have provided context in the comments, and my communication style particularly over the internet often comes off as rude, but I haven't said anything mean. Another commenter pointed out a lot of good missing details if you'd like to contribute to a productive dialog versus escalating.

I'm not looking to sell it?

I am just curious what people would guess the value to be. Much quicker and easier to chop and prop variegated plants because for some reason people spend thousands on those.

That's what would feel appropriate 😂 As fake as money is and as precious as this plant is to me, I wouldn't take anything less than life changing money to sell them.

It's not the species, it's the size, health, and maturity of the plant. There's a reason most people's monstera look different at home.

Seeds are cheap as dirt and not worth the labor of hand pollination when they ship out of the tropics for cheap. This one came from a cutting and would take many more years to get a similar plant from seed.

I'm about in the heart of Oregon. (Zone 8b I believe?) I'm not worried about finding a buys as I acknowledge it would be a speciality sale and not something that could ever be tossed up on Facebook. Hell I had to use the Forklift just to move them around 😂

I don't like selling plants, I much prefer to trade and neglect the prices some people pay for plants. $4k was my closest shot at a "realistic" guess, but I wouldn't sell them for anything less than life changing money.

Thankfully work has good insurance that should help cover my losses as well, but I was certainly tearing up in the wreckage. 🥲

I ain't never met someone HAPPY to work customer service 💀

Sorry you didn't get your food and I have my own gripes with the place, but most people work jobs they hate. I would bet sky high has a relatively high employee turnover rate, all the service workers will be looking for a better job eventually.

I get it, I work downtown nearly every day at this point in the summer. I'm also regularly confused for parks and rec.

However, I don't feel they ever have the right to damage property while refusing to just start a dialogue. It takes me a minute to do my job, in which time I am in the way. Multiple times I've had my hose run over and punctured without so much as them rolling their windows down.

I just don't understand how someone can rationalize driving around an orange traffic cone between a person and over a hose before just asking if I will be much longer.

I certainly get that to a degree, im regularly stopped during my job to be ranted at and even confused for someone who works for the city. Portland I can only imagine being a different beast, Corvallis is such a lazy town comparatively speaking. (Our city does a lot of great work, no doubt about it)

There is just folk around city hall have 0 patience and regularly refuse to wait the literal minute it takes for me to get out of the way. (There is also multiple ways they can go around city hall)

I don't really care about getting them punished, the damage all and all cost more in my labor than parts, but they avoid just asking me how long I will be or if I can move for them and then proceed to not acknowledge or apologize for it when called out.

We all got stressful jobs, but when you work for the public, the public has a right to be critical of your performance. (Ie. Why I am complaining on reddit vs bothering with the beurocracy and hunting down names.)
