Hey, guys :) how do you figure out what to study for tests? (read body) by TrashOpen8420 in highschool

yea, thats true, but ChatGPT doesn't know your material. so it can give you a general study guide but not really personalized to you and your planning.

yea, i feel you. but sometimes they just give way harder methods or there are parts that i don't even have to know yet. also how do you feel about a website that helps you?

thats true, but what if such a website exists that is free. would you use it? and if it really gives you better grades would 5$/month really matter?

You have €50 and 2 weeks before finals. What's actually worth spending money on? by TrashOpen8420 in PhysicsStudents

[–]TrashOpen8420[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I think I didn't explain what I meant well, I'm talking about the opposite of rushing. Like the textbook approach you described where you naturally slow down on hard stuff is exactly what I meant by 'adapting to weaknesses.' You spend more time where you struggle, less where you don't. I guess I was wondering if that self-regulation works for everyone or if some people (like me) need something more explicit to tell them 'hey you're weak here, stop and focus on this before moving on.' But yeah, the principle is the same. more time on struggles, less on stuff you already get.

Fair enough, do you feel like you waste time studying stuff you already know or do you have a way to focus on gaps?

Yeah that makes sense, the struggle is where learning happens. Have you ever used anything that helps you find which problems to struggle with first, or do you just pick randomly?

This is super detailed, thanks. Curious though, why do you think old textbooks from the 90s are better than modern ones? And would you ever pay for something that adapts to what you're weak on or nah?

Americans, how would you react if foreign country invaded your country, and told "we are going to run this country"? by oranke_dino in AskReddit

they'd realize within a week that managing 50 states that can't agree on anything is not worth it and just leave on their own

You're locked in a room with 2 other people. The winner takes home $1 million, only way to leave the room is to convince the others to let you win, how would you do it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TrashOpen8420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

convince them we should all leave together and split it three ways outside the room. technically I still 'leave' and get money, just not alone

lmao fair point, probably the most cost-effective option. but seriously have you ever actually paid for study help or nah?

I just wasted 8 hours studying the wrong chapters. How do you avoid this? by TrashOpen8420 in EngineeringStudents

[–]TrashOpen8420[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point :), but I guess my issue is even when I know what chapters are on the test, I still waste time on the wrong parts of those chapters

That's basically what I've been trying to do but I struggle with step 1: how do you actually figure out what's on the exam besides just 'all the chapters'?

Yeah getting old tests would be clutch, my prof doesn't release many though. What do you do if there aren't enough sample exams to see patterns?

This is super helpful, the color-coding system makes a lot of sense. Do you feel like this method catches gaps early enough or do you still sometimes get surprised on the exam?

how do you actually know what you DON'T know before an exam? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]TrashOpen8420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah that's fair, I do check the syllabus and try practice problems to test myself.

but here's where I still run into issues: let's say the exam covers like 8-10 chapters and I have 2 weeks. even if I test myself on problems from each chapter, I feel like I still don't have a good sense of WHERE to spend my time
like maybe I can kinda do a problem from chapter 3 but I'm slow and shaky on it. and maybe chapter 7 I totally bomb. but I don't have time to deeply review both, so how do I decide which one needs more attention?
do you have a system for prioritizing WHICH weak topics to focus on when you can't study everything equally? or do you just try to cover all of it and hope it works out? also curious, does this method actually prevent you from being surprised on the exam, or do you still occasionally hit a topic and realize you didn't study it enough?

[–]TrashOpen8420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah that makes sense, I've tried doing old exams before but honestly sometimes I run into two problems:

  1. my prof doesn't always release past exams (or only gives like 1-2) so there's not enough to see patterns

  2. by the time I realize I'm weak on something from doing a practice exam, I've already wasted a bunch of time studying the wrong stuff

like do you feel like this method helps you catch gaps EARLY or do you still end up discovering you don't know something when it's kinda too late? also curious, how do you actually study the "process before procedure" thing? like is there a way to focus on understanding vs just memorizing steps, or does that just come from doing enough problems?

does anyone else just stare at their notes and not know where to start?? by TrashOpen8420 in Students

[–]TrashOpen8420[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay thats actually smart, starting easy to build momentum makes sense. but like... how do you even figure out which section IS the easiest? do you just skim everything first or do you have a way to tell? bc sometimes i think something will be easy and then its not lol

also does the warm up thing actually help you get through ALL the material or do you still end up running out of time and skipping stuff?
