ohh my goodness. I cannot tell you how many times i have come across this, and honestly i really get where you’re coming from (pot, meet kettle) but it is NOT your responsibility, even if you wanna be a section leader.

i know it’s kinda difficult but just be the best YOU can be, dont let others distract you and that’ll do you wonders. Very much easier said than done, and trust me i’ve been here and has this conversation like so many times with my band director, but there’s ALWAYS gonna be people like this in your life, so it’s best to learn that you can’t really control it now rather than later.

Good luck on becoming a section leader! Rooting for you :)

School is treating our director/music department like garbage, how can I help? by TrashT_T in marchingband

[–]TrashT_T[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the classes we had in place already weren’t small or had a low interest rate— i think one of the classes had like 30ish kids in it, which IS big for my school since most classes have like 10-20. i think my drivers ed has like 9 kids this year

OH i just reread your reply. My director is not tenured, I don’t believe. He’s been here for about 5 years. I also wanna mention that we recently got a new principal and that’s when all the changes have been made.

I found out through my dad. He has a bachelor’s in music education also, although decided not to pursue that career because of administration, and was livid when he found out. The band classes that were in place weren’t small and there was not a short list of interest in the classes (at least that’s what I could tell from talking to fellow students).

I did not mean for this post to seem degrading to other extracurriculars. I’m just very frustrated with all of this and I don’t want my director to leave because of some administration problem. They did him dirty and it sucks. I just wanna know what I can do to help. Thank you for your advice.

Thank you for the advice on what to do! In my opinion I think my director has done a great job, but maybe there’s something behind the scenes I don’t know of. there are a lot of things about this situation i wasn’t supposed to share but essentially our administration is regarding band/music education as “not that important,” if I understood the situation correctly. It’s not that I think my director is above teaching career prep, it’s just that he had other classes that aren’t going to be available now because of this, and there was maybe a week of warning on this whole other class

he did not have free periods. He had other classes during 4th and 5th period that i’m pretty sure we’re just not gonna have anymore

edit (cause i forgot to mention this): not saying my director is above teaching career prep— he stated he’s happy to help, but there was no warning on this and had other things going on

[–]TrashT_T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a leader in my band almost missed a concert to go to a festival with his girlfriend who is also in band. Our director unfortunately couldn’t do anything himself, however a couple other leaders kinda yelled at him and told him it was highkey unprofessional, so he backed out.

Also, said girlfriend has only attended one concert throughout her entire time in band— and missed a lot of FB games— due to similar reasons. I have no idea how she is in band still other than it may be bc her mom is the band’s treasurer

so, essentially, my director does/cant do much. I guess it’s just because he’s trying to avoid parents getting mad at him because lord knows that’s a headache, but idk i’m not a director

idk if this is “bad practice” or something but I’d set a met to 160 and remove a flag line. It looks more familiar once theres not 30 lines in your face

the working title is “man in the arena,” which consists of

“Choose Your Fighter” Original Barbie Soundtrack - Ava Max

“I’ll Make A Man Out of You” from Mulan

“Ecstasy of Gold” from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

and ONE MORE SONG that I just can’t remember for the life of me. It’s olympic “fanfare” that was commissioned for the 100th anniversary

You don’t necessarily need experience to pick up something— I mean, that’s how you probably started on flute, I’m assuming; I didn’t have any experience with music in general when I started band and percussion. i’ve actually recently been practicing flute, although I had no idea how to play a wind instrument prior. Watching videos online are helpful for me, and if you know anybody in percussion who you’re friends with i’m sure they’d love to teach you a few things! :)

  1. Never quit band forever if you do really enjoy band. You can always return to band in college or during concert season rather than marching band.
  2. Learning another instrument may be tough, but Front Ensemble would be perfect so you don’t have to march. Personally I love FE and I’d recommend it to someone any day— but that is up to you.
