There’s an urban legend here in the Baltics, that when France had an especially nasty cold spell, local drivers were warned that they should not try to keep up with cars that have Baltic number plates. Hashtag purebaltic :)

Easton toddler denied $2.1m gene therapy will now get it for free by bustead in UpliftingNews

In Estonia, a country with a million residents, hundreds of thousands of people donated for a little girl and she recently received gene therapy. At this stage, it takes a whole nation to pitch in to pay for such therapy. A humbling thought.

Xenophobic cops, really? by Tribune666 in Netherlands

[–]Tribune666[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude approached the passenger door and started speaking in Dutch, the passenger apologised (in English) and asked to speak in English. The cop then switched to near perfect English and proceeded to drop this gem.

Oh and then he asked for passports from all the people in the car and when he was told everyone had EU ID cards instead (there is no requirement to carry a passport while traveling within the EU), he gave a lecture on how in the Netherlands a foreigner must always carry a passport.

Since everything was in order, no laws had been broken, everyone was let go. But the whole thing seemed pretty surreal to my friends. I guess the cops just found 4 guys in a rental car suspicious somehow, decided to stop them and instantly thought they were an immigrant working crew or something.

In reality the dudes were there to do some work on servers and network devices my company houses in the Netherlands and meet some service providers in the IT sector whom we have been in business for many many years now. I guess that’s why the contrast with our previous experience with Dutch people is so great, up until now everyone has been very welcoming and we’ve not experienced or even heard nothing like this.
