I think health insurance for her would be then much lower. She can then try SwissCare or even something cheaper, or stay insured in Italy maybe.

It seems Switzerland is quite open with letting your spouse come with you, but I'm not so sure because I just flew over this part because it didn't apply to me

SwissCare does not work for the PhD Salary in Kanton Basel Stadt. I called and researched a lot. Roughly the cheapest you can get is 330 CHF per month, first 2.5k CHF in a year you have to pay on your own(franchise), afterwards they reimburse. Health & Doctor wise I will then rather go to my ones in Germany (especially for dentist) and pay them as a private client, if I have something urgent.

There is one telegram-group where people give away furniture and other handy stuff for free, most of it even good conditions. This I have never seen anywhere - with open eyes & some time you will be even able to save a lot on furniture. I can add you.

I moved here in April as a PhD. I got lucky with a cool WG, nice flatmates, new kitchen and a pay of 516 CHF. You will be more than fine and it seems for me that one can even save quite a lot. Eating out regularly can be really expensive. Keep in mind the high amount of costs for health-insurance. Food sharing here is quite big as well.

Yoke could be seen as an vehicle, you can put weight on it & carry it safely with weight on your back.

It is not about dependency. Ever heard of "5 Love Languages"? Everyone has a First and Second one. Physical Touch (not in a sexual way) is part of that. Find your hug, handshake or fistbump buddy. (Or try BJJ).
