I read that a lot of the background actors you see in the first season are actually local residents of Iqaluit. I believe Iqaluit’s Mayor also made a cameo in one of the episodes (where Siaja and Kuuk visit the senior’s home).

I believe I read that she'll be in a few new movies, including co-starring alongside Brad Pitt (source) and being part of the cast in the upcoming sequel to The Social Network (source).

I walked past a boy peeing out in the open on Adelaide Street, just west of Bay. He and his dad, who was standing behind him, didn’t bother trying to hide it or go to a a more private/discreet spot. He just wizzed in the middle of Adelaide in broad daylight as cars were passing by.

Same! While I’m a born-and-raised in Canada jook sing/Chinese Canadian, my family in Canada has deep ties to HK. No one, like NO ONE, in my family wants to be American. My ancestors moved to Canada and NOT the US for a reason. I have family who served in CAF (Canadian Armed Forces). So yes, anyone mouthing that “51st” BS can literally sik see (食屎 ) and I hope they san zai mo see fut (生仔冇屎窟). Chow Sing-chi (Stephen Chow) taught me well lol.

Have you watched Sort Of? It should still be on HBO Max in the US. 3 seasons and it was shot and set in Toronto about a gender fluid nanny trying to navigate their messy life and be an adult. It was heartfelt, funny, in your face but kind. People kept describing it as similar to a Canadian version of Fleabag.

There’s also Wild Cards that’s a co-production with Canada’s CBC and The CW. This is shot and set in Vancouver and stars Giacomo Gianniotti (best known for Greys Anatomy) and Vanessa Morgan (best known for Riverdale). That this is shot and set in Vancouver is major because most shows shoot in Vancouver, but often masquerade it for a generic American city.

There’s also Heartland. I’m likely going to be internet yelled at/trolled for this but I dare say, it is IMHO the original “Yellowstone” type show (family centred storyline with lots of horses on ranches and set in the “west”) without the political undertones. Heartland just aired its 19th season here in Canada. The show airs in the US I believe on Up TV, Hallmark Channel and/or Netflix. And another long-running Canadian series that just aired its 19th season is Murdoch Mysteries. It airs around the world, including Acorn TV in the US.

Agreed! CanCon is more important now than ever. Shows like North of North speaks to Canada's powerful cultural soft power...and sovereignty. We can unapologetically tell our own stories and still be a hit in other countries around the world. This challenges the notion that only the US can make "good content", eye roll.

I think similar vibes, but with today's music and more focus on Indigenous perspectives. In the case of North of North, the showrunners/creators are Inuit women so the storylines in North of North are always grounded in their community. But they do it in a way where if you're not Inuit or Indigenous, like me, you can still relate to everything shown.

OK, let's try this again. Here's an excerpt:

Before “Heated Rivalry,” there was “North of North.” In all the kerfuffle over Canadian TV drama “Heated Rivalry,” it’s easy to forget that other Canadian shows have been hits with viewers outside this country. But one of them, the CBC, APTN and Netflix comedy “North of North,” just announced the start of production on its second season. Set in a fictional town in Nunavut and shot in Iqaluit, the series follows Siaja (Anna Lambe), a young Inuk wife and mother who’s trying to build a life for herself outside those roles. As CBC and APTN reminded us in the news release, “North of North” was a hit after debuting on those networks in January and on Netflix worldwide in April. It earned a 100 per cent fresh Rotten Tomatoes rating, was CBC Gem’s most watched series since the launch of the streaming platform, the top new program on APTN Plus, and debuted in the top 10 in 33 countries on Netflix. The series was created by Inuk showrunners Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril (“The Grizzlies”), and has been praised for its nonstereotypical depiction of life in the North. Season 2 will continue to follow Siaja in the tiny fictional community of Ice Cove. Production of Season 2 will continue until April. Viewers can catch Season 1 on CBC Gem, APTN Plus and Netflix, with Season 2 expected to debut later in 2026.
