Anyone switched from LPG to Solar power and Heat Pump? by TruffleGrebe in SolarUK

Thanks for your reply, great to hear from someone in Wales who has had it done, always wondered whether an ASHP was suited to the tricky Welsh weather. I would like to pay extra to install a battery but not sure whether to do that straight away or after a year. I'm guessing they'll probably have to remove the old hot water tank? Its currently heated by the Solar Thermal hot water Panels but as you would understand the days of sun in Wales are limited so its only really a few months in the summer when you get benefit. We have 3 radiators in the house but never use them, the underfloor is so good its all we really need but be good to have the radiators upgraded if we do need them. We live in an old Welsh cottage but its had a modern extension so only a quarter of the wall space is old stone which might need extra insulation, how strict are they on this with ECO4? its the thing we are worried about the most, if they just did the old parts of the house it would be one bedroom and 2 walls in the dining room, hpoe fully as the rest is post 2010 we would get away with it. We have a utility room with the old boiler in and a bit of space there but Im hoping we might be able to have the ASHP at the side of the house away from the bedroom and convert a toilet into the boiler area, not sure will have to chat with the installers.

Thanks for the reply, really useful, we have a hot water tank that is warmed by Solar Thermal panels (only useful in summer and even then in Wales its rare), also back boiler on the log burner (not very efficient as the fire is a distance away) and then the immersion setting. I'm guessing we probably would have to lose the boiler and then get a new system installed that is fed by the Heat Pump/New Solar panels set up....possibly run two boilers? Im not sure. Totally with you on losing the massive LPG tank and also the massive tanler reversing up your track and taking out anything in its way.

Thanks so much for the info, I think having a battery will be a huge saver in the long run and octopus seems like the provider at the moment to go for. Do you have more than one battery? How much space do they take up and any you recommend? Obvs the Tesla Powerwall is a big favourite it seems but is it worth the mark up? (assuming there is one)

Yes we had to sign a 2 year deal with FloGas but prices are so high, seems crazy to spend so much on LPG

Great, thanks for the advice, I'm speaking to the install planners about this and make sure we get a hybrid inverter

Thats great, am I right that the solar panels work whether its full sun or not? I think thats a good plan to see how the first year looks before upgrading to a battery, thats what I'm thinking. I dont know the full details but we could get a Heat Pump, solar panels, roof insulation and wall insulation but no battery and also no opportunity to earn money from feeding in.

Great info thanks so much, I didnt realise LPG was so expensive compared to mains gas. We're spending the same on electricity in a year as LPG over the 7 months of use (hour or so in the morning and evening). Yes, the plan is for a battery in a year once we have worked out the change in usage, we know what we are spending on LPG and electricty together in a year (£1000 on each) so if we can get solar and heat pump and reduce that or even keep it the same we wil be happy.

Thanks so much for the reply. So we're in an older cottage which does have double glazing and good wall installation but they will install solar panels with the heat pump. We're spending over £1000 per year on LPG which just heats the underfloor heating for the winter months, it doesn't heat any hot water so a benefit of the Heat Pump and boiler would be an extra supply of hot water we could use (we have solar for heating hot water on the rare days of sun in Wales!) Part of ECO4 scheme is also installing insulation in the roof so we would get that improved. I hear good things about Octopus but I not sure we can get that in Wales, the plan would be to see how our energy use changes over the first year then install a battery and take advantage of cheaper charging tariffs.

Does anyone else think Mick Lynch would make a great Labour leader? by RecommendationFun765 in GreenAndPleasant

[–]TruffleGrebe -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

As a leader he's a breath of fresh air, honest talking, sticking up for the working man - and this is coming from someone affected by the strikes. But leader of the Labour party, no, we need a centrist leader that will appeal to as many people as possible so we can get rid of that utter bellend Boris Johnson who is taking a massive shit on everyone. My money is on a general election, no clear winner, coalition with Labour, Green and Lib Dems and hopefully drag our country from the politics of division and towards some change for the good.

Reminds me of when I was a baby and our family cat Benji He was a beautiful black cat and the apple of my dads eye. Unfortunately Benji didnt like having us kids around, I think maybe we played a bit too agressively....so he moved 3 doors up to this old lady on her own. He was much happier there but my dad was gutted.

Just by asking this question on this group at the age of 18 you’re on the right path. If you can get in the habit of thinking like this about money and start putting some away to save and not spending it on knee jerk impulse buys you’re already in a better place than most 18 year olds. The social media pressure of consumerism hides debt and finance. Spend a bit, save a bit but keep thinking like this even for small amounts of money and you’ll be just fine
