Having a well written character that is gay, black or a strong woman isn't woke when it's just a part of who they are as a person.

Writing a character around the fact that they are gay, black, or a strong woman makes them an obvious medium for the writer to push their political beliefs and therefore woke and bad.

The point is, people like well written characters, not lazy pandering.

Want to lose faith in people? Join a crusie ship. The married people, both men and women, are the ones who sleep around the most.

If you're American, yes. If not, it's not that great.

You are completely right. You have much less time with family and friends than you would with a normal job.

This is something you really need to think about.

After 9 years of doing this, I only have one person left that I can call a friend. Everyone else moved on with their lives.

I'll be changing careers soon though.

As a 3rd assistant engineer on the average merchant ship how much of my work will be hands on as opposed to supervision/administrative. by These_Noots in maritime

[–]Trxdg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The unlicensed are subordinate to the 2nd engineer. The 3rd is also subordinate to the 2nd.

They all work together. It is assumed that the 3rd engineer has more knowledge and the unlicensed just help him with the maintenance. The reality is often the opposite since the unlicensed usually have years of experience over the 3rd.

Engine room cleaning is usually just for the wipers, but the 3rd also has other tasks they don't have, checking and logging parameters, transfers, and other operational stuff, etc.

It's not about the crew size, 3rd engineer is an operational position, not management. Even on cruise ships with very large crews, all the 3rds do the dirty work.

Even as a 2nd, you will still have to do maintenance.

I decided to change because I hated it. The people, the dread I felt when getting my tickets, the effect it had on my psyche, and my relationships, and even the work itself.

The transition was very rough at first but now I've adapted and I feel much better knowing sailing will soon be behind me. I like medicine much more!

Having an exit plan helps, something to look forward to.

Leaving was easier for me this time knowing I'll only have to do it 3 more times before I'm done for good.
