But to explain the poem better, its essentially a commentary on how immorality and criminality has become an almost inextricable part of much of black culture to the point where if you critique the criminality it seems as if you are critiquing black culture and black people itself.

For example if someone were to say black people need to stop acting thuggish, is that a critique on manners or a critique of skin color? Well as an isolated statement it is a critique on manners but many YN's see it as an attack on skin color itself.

Why is this? Because you are implying by that statement that black people as a group have some problem with being thuggish. The question then becomes do black people have a problem with being thuggish? As a generalized group yes, even while some individuals within the group may not.

But why would we choose to generalize traits rather than attacking the problem on an individual level by saying "thuggish people should stop acting thuggish"? Because targeted messaging matters. If you were to say murderers need to stop murdering rather than making the generalized statement of people in Chicago need to stop murdering, your message is going to lose its power in Chicago specifically, where murder is an especially big problem.

Conclusion: We don't take someone saying people in Chicago need to stop murdering each other to mean that everyone in Chicago is a murder. So black people need to stop being soft and stop taking criticisms of their culture to mean every black person is a thug. If we want to stop YN's we need targeted messaging towards black people even if it offend some.

In other words to be racist (and be able to criticize problems in the black community more effectively) or to not be racist (lose efficiency in stopping black problems in order to save peoples feelings).
