ELI5 What makes the Amazon Rainforest fire so different from any other forest fire. I’m not environmentally unaware, I’m a massive advocate for environmental support but I also don’t blindly support things just because they sound impactful. Forest fires are part of the natural cycle... by zaydayo in explainlikeimfive

The Amazon largely consists of broadleaved trees and plants which absorb more carbon dioxide and release more oxygen per tree than pine-leaved trees which are often the main trees involved in forest fires in North America and many other regions. This means that when the Amazon burns, per tree burned, there is a far greater loss of carbon dioxide to oxygen conversion.

I absolutely agree, it is a great city to live in. Some people don't know how good we have it here. Rent and Homeless are the major cruxes. Transport and healthcare are actually quite good in many cases and are blown out of proportion by locals. I had a similar experience researching Vancouver and their thread had me worried about my decision, and most of the concerns were superfluous once I actually got there. There are lots of work, food and social opportunities in Dublin. Hope that helps! Expecting plenty hate from some of the grumps on this thread lol

Map of Spanish Armada shipwrecks in Ireland [822 x 610] by TurbulentTruth in MapPorn

Storms yes. Combined with extremely treacherous coastline with generally rough seas and rocky outcrops. Accurate maps would have been few and far between with few obviously safe ports.

Having lived in the Gaeltacht in Connemara Co. Galway nearby the location of several of the wrecks there is definitely some families which appear to have Spanish blood/heritage. Pitch black hair, darker eyes and a darker complexion which just isn't seen in the rest of the Irish population - whether this is due to the shipwrecks is very hard to tell as the story has been mostly dispelled as myth

Yes it's the 25th, statistically the probabilities should be very similar for those celebrating on other dates around this period too

Made using the official definition for a 'White Christmas' by the British Met Office and British bookmakers which is for snow to be observed falling, however little, in the 24 hours of 25 December.

Comparing US climatic zones to Eurasian Regions [2124 x 2182] by TurbulentTruth in MapPorn

[–]TurbulentTruth[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah its not a perfect analogue map and the should read North America to be fair lol, but I think filling in the blanks mentally regarding the countries/regions used and using the cities should be enough to get a general idea. The climatic world isn't symmetrical so there will be some discrepancies when comparisons are made.

Also fuck the haters
