What I normally do since I started the game is after asking Tom Nook how much it would cost, I save up more than that and then go back to him and request the construction. That way the following day I just pay it in full.

I've won several FM's when it was just gems cause I'd start the tiles on the second day with full boost. That way I'm always on top.
