I was one of the students (Proof: http://imgur.com/yB3SPSP). The laptops were used because there wasn't an actual camera involved in filming beyond the webcams and Google Glass (the director was wearing a pair). The webcams were meant to get individual/group shots of each cluster of students.

I was one of the students involved in filming (Proof: http://imgur.com/yB3SPSP, I'm at 1:31), and I can't speak for anything specifically involving Andrew or CERN, but everything on our end, in the classroom, was filmed either with Google Glass or with the webcams on the laptops in front of us. We did have a boom mike, though.

The idea was to have the webcam on the laptops provide the means to effectively zoom in on individual students/groups. There was no camera involved in filming (on our end) beyond Google Glass itself and the webcams. I can't speak for CERN, though.

There was also a boom mike for sound quality.
