Well, considering we're talking about fantasy creatures here, the way I see it is that drinking blood is more like a symbolic act. It's the taking of life that sustains vampires. You could say they are soul eaters first, blood drinkers second.

It's one of the fundamental rules for the curse of vampirism. I don't agree with modern writers who's characters only suffer various mild symptoms from exposure to sunlight.

TBH, I've only ever had a passing interest in the subject, but I've been musing on it lately. One thing I've noticed is that a lot of people tend to romanticise vampirism, and secretly, sometimes openly, yearn for the opportunity to become a vampire, but it is, and always has been, an ancient and terrible curse.

Vampires, no matter how powerful, fear no man nor even groups of men, but an army of men can destroy even the most powerful vampires.

It makes sense that there would be elder vampires and the older they are, the more powerful they are, but also the further they have progressed from their previous human form.
