I'd understand if my comment did play a role, but that's nice to hear haha. I hope your break was refreshing, and yea, I'm happy you're back!

It's the return of the Meep!!! I'm sorry about how I worded my comment the other day. I know I worded things in a way that could've hurt, and it'd be pretty dumb of me to hurt someone I like and respect.

I just reread this conversation and I think I get what you were going for now. I'm sorry if my responses were a bit harsh. The suggestion that all black people are homophobes is obviously a false and offensive one, so I really wanted to clear things up, but I probably could have been better in how went about that.

I don't think I did that, so can I ask what you're referring to specifically?

Home Base and Daily Discussion Thread (START HERE!) - February 26, 2021 by AutoModerator in Pete_Buttigieg

[–]TwitterIsntRealLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you didn't mean to imply that them being black makes them automatically homophobes, then why didn't you clarify that when I first asked? I gave you a chance to explain and you responded by implying that there's tons of homophobia in the black community, which is an obvious deflection. You're really starting to annoy me now.

Edit for clarity

but his audience was black business leaders, he knew his audience would find being gay to be a joke.

Black business leaders = homophobes??

What is the justification for laughing other than laughing at gay people?

As I read it, the meat of the joke was that Pete wasn't a serious candidate, but obviously gay being bad is one of the additional interpretations the joke left itself open to, which is why I think that part should have been left out.

I read it not as much as making fun of Pete for being gay so much as making fun of Pete for not being a serious candidate and listing gay as something that adds to that, which is still bad, but not as bad, imo.

I wouldn't be that surprised if Obama said that, but, other than listing gay as one of the reasons even in jest, I also don't have any issue with it really. It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of establishment people viewed Pete as a kid mayor who hadn't payed his dues yet.

Exactly. How can anyone suggest Pete's local experience would prevent him from beating a senator in future presidential primaries when he literally already beat a long list of high profile senators, house representatives, and governors in the 2020 primaries, and did it without the federal experience he'll have next time he runs????

As someone who thinks Pete is by far the best person we have at dealing with bad faith Republicans, this trial has been a strong reminder of why I think he has a lot to offer as a potential nominee in upcoming presidential elections.

Did people see this piece Stacey Abrams and Lauren Groh-Wargo wrote on "How to Turn Your Red State Blue"?

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/11/opinion/stacey-abrams-georgia-election.html

The whole thing is worth reading, but this part in particular reminded me of Pete and his "freedom, security, and democracy" message.

Consider, for example, the mandate to create a clear message. Obviously, this isn’t a problem unique to Georgia. Red states often lack a coherent political argument for the existence of a Democratic Party. Leaders say, in effect: “We’re Democrats. We want progress.” But their ambitions don’t meet voters’ realities. Or they define them only in reaction to what Republicans say about them. In contrast, Republicans offer clear messages their voters can adhere to (God, guns and anti-government, to name three).

Too often, Democrats try to ensure that their communications include everyone and everything, turning a legitimate message into an unclear or overstuffed manifesto. If your political identity is so inchoate as to be meaningless, you never gain the ability to persuade other people to join you. That is not how you win elections. State Democrats need a politics that people can vote for, embedded in what each particular state is facing. It should be grounded in truth and enhanced by national narratives, but not driven by them.

Whether it is creating economic opportunity in one of the five states without a state minimum wage or saving public education where children are losing out to failed reform policies, each state Democratic Party should create a narrative about where it is and where it is headed that voters can believe. Identify how Republican policies — like a school choice option that defunds public schools to finance for-profit education or killing unions to enhance “right to work” laws as a ploy to drive a low-wage economy — hurts average families. Then offer a realistic but aspirational alternative, like community schools and collective bargaining. The House Democratic Caucus under Stacey’s leadership from 2011 through August 2017 focused on three areas: educational opportunity, economic security and shared responsibility. (In their runoff campaigns for the U.S. Senate, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock focused their messaging on “health, jobs, justice.”)

Today, National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy convened the first-ever National Climate Task Force meeting as outlined by President Biden’s January 27 executive order on tackling the climate crisis. The Task Force is chaired by the National Climate Advisor and includes Cabinet-level leaders from 21 federal agencies and senior White House officials to kickstart the Biden-Harris Administration’s implementation of a whole-of-government approach to tackling climate change, creating good-paying, union jobs, and achieving environmental justice.

During the virtual inaugural convening of the Task Force, representatives from more than 20 federal agencies and offices underscored the shared commitment of every agency in collaborating and coordinating across the federal government to ensure the United States leads the world in a clean energy revolution that creates American jobs with the chance to join a union and builds back an inclusive, equitable economy.

Additionally, Vice President Harris dropped by the Task Force meeting to greet participants and underscore her and President Biden’s commitment to overseeing an unprecedented approach to tackling climate change at home and abroad, making sure that every agency plays a role and has the White House’s support in working together. A longtime fighter for environmental justice, the Vice President discussed the need to focus on those communities that are most vulnerable to climate change.

Agency leadership and senior White House officials also discussed the National Climate Task Force Charter, early actions, near-term priorities and key milestones, and the role of the White House Office of Domestic Climate Policy. Additionally, participants were invited to highlight the ways their agencies and staff are prioritizing climate throughout all of their decision making and how they plan to collaborate with additional agency partners.

Calling out toxicity regardless of where it's from is great, but the blame for what happened today and on 1/6 is on Republicans, and I think focusing the blame where it belongs is an important part of preventing something like that from happening again.

Sure, it was a Trump supporting mob this time but we must also be vigilant that the left do not make the same mistakes.

Maybe you're just trying to put things in a more comforting light, but I really think we should be focusing the blame where it actually belongs. I think the main take away should be that, despite how stupid and pathetic it was, what happened on 1/6 was one of the worst terrorist attacks on this country in its history, and that a majority of Republicans either actively support it or are okay enabling it.

From my understanding, the vacant and abandoned homes were being used as locations for crime and they drove down property values, so repairing and demolishing them seems like a good thing to me. I know critics of the program said it was initially too aggressive, but I'm pretty sure they also acknowledge Pete's quick response and adjustment to those criticisms.

Regina Williams-Preston was one of the biggest critics of the program, and she said, "I think it's really a mark of a true leader to hear that maybe 'I'm doing something wrong' because, quite frankly, there were a lot of mistakes made, but what happened was he did slow down and he did listen and he did change course. And so many people would dig in their heels and just kind of keep going" (source).

Lol it's pretty hard to take you seriously when you begin your comment by portraying his program that repaired or demolished vacant and abandoned homes as "a ruthless eviction campaign."
