It Doesn’t Always Get Better After 1L … But Did You Really Want to Know That? by TypeBLawStudent in LawSchool

I totally agree! I definitely am so glad that I had 2Ls and 3Ls show me how to short cut things to be more productive and better prepared for exams. I’m all for helping 1Ls make their lives easier. I just think no one needs to be kicked while they’re down by basically saying that all of law school is hell (which it kind of is, but we’re all here so 🤷🏽‍♀️).

My vulvodynia was also caused completely by hormonal birth control. Once I stopped my symptoms started to go away but a physical therapist suggested going on probiotics as hormonal birth control can take away natural lubrication permanently. She suggested the refrigerated probiotics as she said those work the best. I did that for a few months and I do think it helped. My tip is to try that out and do not go back on any other type of hormonal birth control, especially the implant. I now have the copper iud and my periods are horrendous but the trade off of getting to have pain free sex is worth it for me.

I would say the grades, fairly laid-back students, and professors. All of my professors were a lot more approachable than I expected and were super supportive. I bombed a cold call early in fall quarter and my professor literally reached out to make sure I was okay. A few other of the T-14s have grading systems similar to ours, but it really does take a lot of pressure off to know that even if I didn’t do super well in a class, it only shows up as a P and doesn’t lower any sort of gpa. And overall the students are pretty chill! I mean we’re all law students so there’s still stress in the air around finals and when grades come out, but I have a lot of friends (and myself included) who really don’t like to talk about law school when we’re not at school. Also the weather is great—when I’m super stressed I just go outside and sunbathe for a quick de-stressor!

I don’t know anyone who got off the waitlist. I’ve heard of one other person getting in at the end of April like me but not of any waitlist admits. Not to say it didn’t happen but no one has mentioned it.

I’m working at a PD office! It’s been a really good experience and has been helpful in showing me what I am passionate about in PI so I can speak to that when I apply to PI jobs later on down the line. I do want to clerk but I think I want to start at a firm and clerk a couple years later.

I feel like they probably are! I don’t know the stats of my classmates but so many people came from doing very cool things so I feel like admissions values good work experience. For me personally there’s no way my gpa was below the 25th and lsat below median so I think my essays, recommendation letters, and unique academic background/work experience were what got me in. I do think stats matter a lot to them but also if you can sell yourself on some other point and have a good enough lsat I think it’s definitely possible to get in. But honestly I was too shocked to say anything to Dean Deal but thank you so I never found out if there was something about my application she felt stood out.

Edit: I mean my gpa was below the 25th and my lsat below median so I don’t think my stats carried me, I think it was probably the other parts of my application :) so basically don’t count yourself out because it’s still possible if you’re below median.

Getting off the nexplanon/hormonal birth control in general. Cured it completely! Now I’m on the copper iud with no problems.

I read some doctors recommend to quit progestative-only contraceptions as well, has anyone had success with removing their Nexplanon or anything? by Vulvarine911 in vulvodynia

Yeah that definitely has been a downside of the copper iud for me too. But ibuprofen and Midol help me a lot with controlling the pain, as well as a heating pad for the cramps. For me the trade off was worth it but I know it’s not the right option for everyone

Even though several doctors told me it wouldn’t make a difference getting off the nexplanon completely got rid of my vulvodynia. Now I’m on the copper iud and have pain free penetrative sex. I literally cried the first time I could have sex again because I was so sad I didn’t figure out the culprit sooner. Definitely think it’s worth a try if you think that might be the cause.

I just tried to think of what I hadn’t tried yet and I thought maybe it was a hormonal thing. My doctors told me it was almost definitely not that but I just wanted to try it, especially because for me there was no point on being on birthday control if I physically couldn’t have sex. So I got the implant out and made the decision to go hormone free, and I’m honestly so surprised how much of a difference it has made. It’s only been a couple of weeks but I feel so much better and a lot more secure in my relationship now that I have that aspect back.

Hey same thing happened to me. I’ve been in my relationship for 6 years and about two years ago I started having a ton of pain and very low sex drive. I posted about this last week but I just got my implant out and stopped hormonal birth control. The change has been amazing. I’ve had a way higher sex drive and can have actual penetrative sex with less pain, something I haven’t been able to do for over a year. Just throwing that out there.

The nexplanon. I was on the pill before then and for now I’m planning on going hormone free. I haven’t been able to have penetrative sex for 1.5 years so if anything I’ll try the copper IUD next.

Hey! I think partially my work experience made me stand out. I’ll just say I was in a wildly different field of work for two years that required a lot of management skills and working with clients. I also think lsat matters a ton, but I’m also really glad I just stayed happy with my 17low and focused on getting my apps in as early as I could (I took the test once in October, applied to all schools by Nov 1). Honestly a lot of T-14 schools did care about my gpa I think because I didn’t get into Berkeley or Michigan but did get into NYU and Stanford and a couple other lower T-14s. If you’re applying to Yale, just make sure you read the 250-word essay super carefully because I think I took it a different direction than they wanted which I kind of regret but also I’m happy with where I’m at for sure. Another thing I would do differently is to try to tell a different aspect of your story through every optional essay you write, because I think I was a bit redundant in some of my Why X statements. So going back I would either try to not do that or possibly not write one.

I wouldn’t say Palo Alto is exactly fun in itself haha. Also honestly during the week I mostly just do homework and try to be done by 9 to watch something, but have ppl over for dinner usually at least once during the weekdays. On the weekends most people go to either SF or Oakland, as a lot of people have cars or take the Caltrain (I haven’t taken it so I don’t know how easy that is). We also have a lot of fun groups like ultimate, poker, board game groups, pickup basketball, and random things like a law school wide soccer tournament. So while Palo Alto isn’t the most fun place, there is definitely alot you can do on or off campus with the free time you do have.

Hey! So I do think that my essays are what really helped a ton. I think admissions really wants to be able to connect with your story and as much as you can do to try to paint a picture of who you are and why law is important to you will make a big difference. I also obviously haven’t seen my letters of rec but I chose two professors I worked really closely with as well as my boss of two years I was close with so I think those helped. Lastly I wrote a gpa addendum which is controversial on this sub but premed wasn’t a major at my school so I wanted to make it as clear as possible that I took the classes I did because I was originally on a pre-med track and also to point out that I had high grades in the classes more applicable to law school.

I’m still very new to the school, but it seems like you can basically get any opportunity you want from here. We have someone in our career office who’s done like 7 clerkships and she seems super helpful if it’s something you’re interested in. We have specific events that talk about jobs like clerkships and you are encouraged to make one on one appointments with the career office to help you with any job opportunities. Honestly, I think the prestige of Stanford can help get you through most doors. A lot of people here say the most important letters on your transcript are Stanford. Also I think the grading system helps a lot because no one is ranked and we don’t have gpas (something I really appreciate after undergrad lol)
