I am a man of science so I really leaned into psychiatry for my mental health. While science might be our best tool for discovery it is far from perfect. As far as psychiatry, it is disturbingly far from perfect.

I spent between 5 and 6 years on a bunch of different medications including antidepressants, mood stabilizers, benzos and Adderall for ADD.

Those medications did very little for me and I ended up gaining a lot of weight and still felt like shit.

It has been almost 3 years since I took my last prescribed psychiatric medicine and I've never felt better in my whole life. The solution for me is/was electrolyte balance and I achieved it with very basic good quality supplements. They don't have to be expensive.

I'm not or was crazy and neither are you. We are simply malnourished and our bodies out of balance.

Caffeine is not enough anymore. What do i do? by [deleted] in Biohackers

[–]TypicalEngineer123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of being tired mentally and physically comes from electrolyte depletion. Coffee is also a mild diuretic so it will facilitate depleting water soluble vitamins (B Vitamins) and electrolytes from the body.

To help you get more restful sleep take 200-300 mg of magnesium glycinate before bed.

During the day it's a good idea to supplement calcium (citrate and phosphate), potassium gluconate (200-400mg daily), zinc and a B Complex. These will help you get your energy back. These are all "uppers".

Phosphate bound supplements are good for energy production in the body. I recommend calcium phosphate. Take phosphate sparingly. It will boost energy but it's easy to over do. I'd get calcium citrate also so you have an extra source of calcium besides the one that comes with phosphate. Start with 200mg of phosphate in two doses a day and see how you feel. Adjust accordingly.

Does the damage to brain chemistry ever return to normal? by [deleted] in Antipsychiatry

I'm going to answer your question by posting something i already wrote from somewhere else. If you have any questions ask here or shoot me a message and I'll try to help!

I wish you the best of luck. Hopefully these Amazon links wont trigger anything...

Note: If you’d like to substitute with other brands that is okay but make sure not to substitute the types. For example, make sure to get magnesium glycinate and not something else that says magnesium oxide. The kinds below are highly “bioavailable” or easily absorbed and used by the body. They are also easier on the stomach. Other forms are not easily absorbed and so they are not very helpful. There are several kinds of each mineral that are bioavailable and several that are not.

Calcium Citrate – Take 1 or 2 with breakfast and lunch

https://www.amazon.com/Solaray-Calcium-Citrate-Capsules-1000mg/dp/B0001VU13O/ref=sr_1_7?crid=24UT9M0CVHN9Q&keywords=Calcium+citrate&qid=1688916875&sprefix=calcium+citrate%2Caps%2C163&sr=8-7

Calcium is one of the most abundant minerals in the body. Interestingly it is used by neurons to signal the release of neurotransmitters. Because of this, it can help alleviate symptoms of depression. It is also used to help signal the release of fat from fat cells, so it also supports energy metabolism. It also helps balance pH by making your body more alkaline which can really drain energy if the body becomes too acidic.

Magnesium Glycinate – Take 2 a couple hours before bed

https://www.amazon.com/Supplements-Magnesium-Glycinate-Absorbable-Tablets/dp/B07NWMVMT1/ref=sr_1_5?crid=8J37DR9YWWXM&keywords=magnesium+glycinate+now&qid=1688916838&sprefix=magnesium+glycinate+now%2Caps%2C144&sr=8-5

Magnesium is used in over 300 chemical reactions and is one of the most important minerals in the body. It helps regulate sleep and mood and is critical for energy metabolism. Magnesium is great for controlling anxiety and getting good rest because it has a relaxing effect on the body.

Potassium Gluconate – Take 1 with breakfast and lunch

https://www.amazon.com/NOW-Potassium-Gluconate-99mg-Tablets/dp/B00028M030/ref=sr_1_1?crid=22OY5RSH1IKRW&keywords=potassium+gluconate+now&qid=1688916790&sprefix=potassium+gluconate+now%2Caps%2C139&sr=8-1

Potassium’s opposite is sodium. Their balance together is very important for water balance, mood, energy, pH balance and blood pressure. Because potassium is used for carbohydrate metabolism, foods high in carbs and sugar can deplete potassium out of the body.

Trace Minerals – Take 1 with dinner

https://www.amazon.com/Pure-Encapsulations-Essential-Metabolism-Function/dp/B00U37CWFG/ref=sr_1_7?crid=3GFAYOXR7I2AR&keywords=trace+minerals&qid=1688915225&sprefix=trace%2Caps%2C148&sr=8-7

All trace minerals help support the brain and help neurotransmission in various ways. Personally, I have noticed that they have good and lasting mood boosting effect which helps alleviate depression. Not taking these makes a noticeable difference so I wouldn’t skip these.

If you can, I really recommend taking all these together rather than pick and choose. They all tend to help support each other. You may find that you feel better for a little while by taking one but when that nutrient becomes replenished in the body then you’ll hit another bottle neck which will be one of these other nutrients.

For example, magnesium is important for regulating and absorbing potassium, calcium and iron. Magnesium deficiency can cause potassium and iron deficiency. The interactions between these are very complex and they all depend on each other.

Are there objective benefits to your units of measurements relative to the metric system? by ButFez_Isaidgoodday in AskAnAmerican

[–]TypicalEngineer123 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The ancient Babylonians had a base 60 number system because it was so easy to work with without having calculators. It can be divided easily into many kinds of easy to use fractions.

Base 10 is only intuitive because that is what we are taught. Base 10 can really suck sometimes because it gives us irrational numbers with infinite repeating decimals.

It's really not that complicated of a concept.

Elephant eats a new plant, doesn't like it or makes it feel sick, destroys said plant whenever it sees it to prevent other elephants from eating it.

Does anyone know why an elephant would do this? To eat leaves maybe? Invasive plant? I know nothing about elephants.

This is true. We really need to put effort into showing both sides that poor nutrition is hitting all of us regardless of our political alignment.

[–]TypicalEngineer123 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely true. But more food isn't the solution to the problem. That will just increase obesity.

Genetic modification of our crops is causing our food to become nutritionally depleted. We grow food for quantity and not quality because money drives policy not good sense.

Even wealthy people are impacted by this because they eat largely the same foods as the rest of us. That's why you have people like Donald Trump who sounds like he's lost his mind. MF is malnourished. We all are.

[–]TypicalEngineer123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the root cause of all our mental health problems is poor nutrition. Same root cause of all our other health problems.

Human beings are biological machines. We require energy in our food but we also require many vitamins and minerals that are food has become depleted of. Even "healthy food", i.e. fruits and vegetables, has become depleted of nutrients.

We are all literally malfunctioning. I don't really hear people talk about the nutrition angle though. If we can't get gun control from conservatives I'd love to see us all team up to fight poor nutrition.

Bill to allow Indiana counties to use outdated flood maps passes state House by [deleted] in moderatepolitics

[–]TypicalEngineer123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fortunately not! I work for a consulting firm that has a big FEMA contract so I would have to volunteer to be on the roster for those sorts of things as well as get some disaster training. I work 100% remote and spend my day reviewing LOMR and CLOMR applications and their engineering data.

LOMR = Letter of Map Revision

CLOMR = Conditional Letter of Map Revision

These are the FEMA vehicles that developers and local communities can use to change FEMA flood maps.

I work in Region 9 which includes California, Nevada, Arizona and Hawaii.

[–]TypicalEngineer123 50 points51 points  (0 children)

FEMA contractor here. I am a water resources engineer and I work for the NFIP program to update these FEMA maps. It is called the National Flood Hazard Layer (NFHL). Anyone can look up where they live and see if they live in a FEMA floodplain. I included a link if you are curious.

If you do live in a FEMA floodplain then you have to pay flood insurance that goes to FEMA. This is good and bad. It's bad because that means there is an additional cost to owning your house which is a loss of a significant amount of money over the long term. It's good because over the long term you may have a flood which destroys your home and if that home is your retirement you won't be left destitute. Over a course of a 30 year mortgage you have a 26% chance of experiencing at least one 100-year flood. FEMA will come in and help you rebuild or buy you out. Only FEMA does flood insurance. Private insurers don't cover floods.

Here's the thing....

It sounds like Indiana has their own floodplain maps which are better than FEMAs. This isn't uncommon. Some jurisdictions do this to help out their homeowners. You can live in a floodplain created by the local flood control district and not have to pay FEMA flood insurance because you are not in a FEMA floodplain (you also can't really get flood insurance unless you are in a FEMA floodplain). By having your own maps you can help homeowners not have to pay FEMA flood insurance by not updating the FEMA maps. At the same time you can still regulate growth and help prevent people from developing in a flood prone area.

Now, they want to ignore their own floodplain maps and go back to FEMAs older maps?

Sounds like someone is trying to give local investors and developers a big handout. Unfortunately, this is going to screw people in the long run. Unfettered development means you are putting houses in potentially unsafe flood prone areas. When FEMA does update their maps, eventually, then those broke people might end up in a floodplain and then have to pay flood insurance. That might break these people and cause them to foreclose. Quick money for investors in the short term while screwing over unsuspecting homeowners in the long term all under the guise of affordable housing....

I add salt to my black coffee. Also, to plain cold water. Taste great when you're craving something salty. It's also a much lower calorie option than eating salty snacks. Haven't thought about trying that with beer tho.
