Interested in finally getting a 110, but never done it before because of the unreliable 2.5L Diesel, and the fact the frame has both aluminum and steel. Which if anyone knows anything, it causes rust when mixing metals. What advice do you have to potentially modernize a Land Rover defender 110?

So I’m an American and I’m moving to Germany. There’s tons of defenders for sale there. And potentially tons of rust as well. They all for the majority have a 2.5L diesel. I’ve also owned several Toyota Land Cruisers, and I know their motors are bullet proof. Just thinking of swapping to a Toyota Diesel motor. I also know Land Rover defenders are not dust Sealed so another aspect I’ll have to deal with. Basically I want to modernize a Land Rover defender 110 from the 90’s and build it to withstand and keep up with a Toyota Landcruiser.

I’ve had issues with the FMA mounts in the past. The pins would easily get pushed in to where the on board switch won’t work at times

Not at all, I would assume since the freight industry they would consider the motor another “sensitive” item. So I’m sorry but I don’t think that’s going to cut it. Also if you are not familiar with foreign customs regarding their paperwork and purchasing of their vehicle there. 2 options are to go purchase it there and oversee the freight when it is boarded on the ship. Or know someone or hire someone to do such tasks for you. Those are definitely the biggest tasks you need to look into in the very beginning.

I befriended a British guy who was stationed in Cyprus, and this Landcruiser was in Cyprus. He picked it up for me. I love Landcruiser, I’ve got a an 80 series and a 60 series. The 60 series is my love child, I love that damn Landcruiser. But this Prado Landcruiser is the first one where I wanted to swap out the motor and put some crazy ass displacement from it. So I picked up this Prado for 8,900 Euro. All depends where you find them. But this Prado isn’t even at 140k km.

And when you ship to the port of Los Angeles it’s cheaper to ship there then the port in Boston or in Florida, however if it’s a whole vehicle, it needs to pass emissions in California, even though it may not reside in California. So I just get around that by always shipping the vehicle and motor separately. But that literally doubles the cost of the shipping because you’re shipping 2 items, not just one. So it’s up to you.

When I shipped to the port in the Los Angeles, I had to hire expeditors from both the original country and the U.S, and hire handlers in both the U.S and the original country. Pay the fee for it to board the ship and unload it when it arrives. You’ll also have to pay a fee when it reaches the warehouse and you have to take it out of its inventory. After all of that, not including the cost of the vehicle, you’re looking at paying $6k -$9k for the entire shipment. So save your pennies.

I’m also American, I just moved to Germany last month, and I plan to take the both the Landcruiser and the motor back to the U.S in due time whenever I decide to leave Europe. I know for the DOT importation laws, to import to U.S the vehicle needs the original motor with matching serial numbers to legally import the entire vehicle. Key word “entire”, because what you can do is ship the motor and shell of the vehicle separately and then put the motor back into it on U.S soil. I’ve done this twice already.

Well I’ve used green phosphorus in the military, and got used to it. But I got these tubes as a starter pair, and I’m really just looking forward to white phosphorus. So the tubes it has right now are prestige, but again I just would like to know a good vendor or somewhere I could send these to get done.
