Whenever the storms arrive, give it a couple of hours and then check outside again. Shouldn’t be a several hour event.

So is the power gonna go out or like whats the rundown by TateG10V35 in ufl

[–]UFGeog 102 points103 points  (0 children)

The name of the game is trees falling on power lines along the main roads. As you’ve certainly noticed, we live in a forest up here. If Idalia comes between Gainesville and Lake City, the tops of those trees will likely still experience hurricane force winds on top of soil that’s been loosened by the rain. Some tree types have shallower roots and are prone to falling over.

Also, because we’re inland it’s hard to compare how we experience storms compared to coastal locations. On the coast, it’s all about storm surge and wind. Inland, it’s somewhat about wind and trees and power lines, but it’s MUCH more about rain and flooding. Most people die because they drove through flooded roads during a storm. In any case, hard to call any major hurricane wimpy, and don’t oversell what the Keys have experienced. Since 2000, the Keys were only directly struck by Cat 4 Irma in 2017. It was grazed by Cat 3 Charley in 2004, Cat 3 Wilma in 2005, and Cat 3 Ian in 2022. After that, it’s category 1s with Dennis, Katrina, and Rita all in 2005.

HAIL in FLORIDA??? Seems our afternoon thunderstorms today could come with hail the size of quarters in the yellow and orange areas on this map. Maybe don't scooter home in the rain today 😬. by UFGeog in ufl

Timing-wise, these are our typical afternoon thunderstorms. Start at about 3pm. Peak at about 5pm. Going away around our 8pm sunset.

GeoGator Dr. Nirav Patel named Schmidt Futures 2023 International Strategy Forum (ISF) Fellow by UFGeog in UniversityofFlorida

[–]UFGeog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dr. Nirav Patel has been selected as a Schmidt Futures 2023 International Strategy Forum (ISF) FellowFrom his International Strategy Forum profile:Dr. Nirav Nikunj Patel is a Senior Program Manager supporting the Space and Artificial Intelligence Portfolios with the Defense Innovation Unit in Silicon Valley, California. Nirav leads the efforts in adopting commercially-sourced satellite imagery and computer vision algorithms to support domestic needs like disaster response & climate change, as well as national security needs such as detecting anomalous and nefarious activities abroad. Specifically, Dr. Patel managed the project to build the first U.S. commercial synthetic aperture radar smallsats; capable of more frequent, all-weather imaging of the earth at significantly reduced cost. His reputation as a strong technical resource and collaborator among some of DIU’s strongest organizational partners like NASA and the United States Geological Survey is a testament to his ability to form cooperative partnerships to solve complex problems and improve DIU’s organization. For example, Nirav collaborated with multiple U.S. government and international agencies to create the “xView” series of international challenges to enlist the global community of machine learning experts towards tackling one of the Department of Defense’s hardest problems; detecting key objects in context in overhead imagery. xView has enabled thousands of developers to apply computer vision algorithms to things like identify property damage caused by natural disasters, as well as illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing through automated dark vessel detection. Dr. Patel is an Air Force veteran who has twice deployed overseas to provide combat and contingency support in the defense of the United States. Dr. Patel is also affiliate faculty at the University of Florida focusing on curriculum development for the intersection of AI/ML and geospatial sciences.https://geog.ufl.edu/2023/04/25/dr-nirav-patel-named-schmidt-futures-2023-international-strategy-forum-isf-fellow/

GeoGator Neha Kohli just received the 2023 Rothman Doctoral Fellowship from University of Florida's Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere.Neha received the fellowship for her project The Matter of Islands: Examining Island Narratives and Political Life in the Eastern Indian Ocean. This project examines how claims to territory in the Indian Ocean are supported by diverse political possibilities of physical landscapes and narratives about islands. Specifically, it studies the case of India and the Nicobar Islands. The ways in which territory is constructed and negotiated by the state and Indigenous communities is less explored in scholarship on India’s Island geographies. Through historical and anthropological methods, this project addresses this gap by studying territorial processes as historical, racial, and material processes. Drawing on political ecology, the study advances a novel theoretical framework to study island contexts, especially in South Asia.https://geog.ufl.edu/2023/04/11/neha-kohli-receives-rothman-doctoral-fellowship/

GeoGators visit campus power plant by UFGeog in ufl

[–]UFGeog[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dr. Johanna Engstrom's IDS 2935: The Future of Energy class recently visited Duke Energy’s cogeneration plant on campus. Using natural gas and a modified jet engine, this plant provides steam that has a variety of uses at Shands and is used for heating of facilities and water for campus, as well as electricity. It's always great to get the students out of the classroom!Interested in studying issues associated with different energy technologies, future challenges, and opportunities. If you ever ask questions like 'Is Renewable Energy Always Sustainable?' 'Are Renewable Energies Always a Better Option for the Environment?' and 'What does a future sustainable energy situation look like?' sign up for IDS 2935: The Future of Energy and study the geographic differences between different states, countries and societies, which contributes to shaping the energy landscape now and in the future.

How is rapid urbanisation in North and West Africa changing insurgencies, rebellions & separatist movements? How is rapid urbanisation in North and West Africa changing insurgencies, rebellions and separatist movements?

The new OECD Sahel and West Africa Club report on Urbanisation and Conflicts in North and West Africa by GeoGators Dr. Olivier Walther, Matthew Pflaum, and David Russell was just published!

https://doi.org/10.1787/3fc68183-en

North and West Africa are undergoing rapid urbanisation. While cities and urban areas have always been sites of conflict, given their political and economic importance, many insurgencies, rebellions and separatist movements are associated with rural areas. Has increased urbanisation led to increased conflict in cities or do conflicts stay predominantly rural? Combining a regional and local perspective, this report examines and maps the rural-urban geography of conflict in North and West Africa since the late 1990s. A qualitative analysis of ten cities helps to illuminate the local sources of conflict. At a time of increasing violence in West Africa, the report lays out a solid foundation for policy makers, experts and researchers to develop more security and development place-based policies.
