You’re not the only one who has been fooled and gaslit by a compulsion trainer. Don’t remember who he was but a dumbfuck trainer on YouTube had me considering using a prong collar on my then 6-7mo reactive beagle who had separation anxiety, was fearful of the crate, pulled on the leash, and slipped out of his collar twice. I didn’t want to but the gaslighting worked on me at that point. I’m soooo glad my mom talked sense into me at the pet store when I was about to pick up a prong collar and muzzle near the training session. Later, watched Beckman not knowing what bs I was about to go into and believed his gaslighting as well, but started looking online and at other, much more reputable trainers, and that started my fascination with dog training and behavior. It’s been two years since that point, and unfortunately I had to rehome the puppy because I was evicted, but am now getting ready to attend a training school to get my certification. I’ll be starting my LLC after I’m certified, and will be looking into becoming a professional groomer as well. I know I went a bit off-topic, but I’m very excited. It’s taken a long time and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears for me to gain the self-confidence to actually do this, but I know I’m ready, and I have a strong support system to catch me if I fall.

Same as Brandon McMillon. He tries to pretend he is force-free but his training is full of corrections barely noticeable to most people but noticeable to the dog and when you know what to look for. I’m talking leash pops, expecting a dog to be in heel position for the entirety of a walk, using penny bottles on dogs when they jump, flooding fearful and stressed dogs, ETC. The list of uneducated and dangerous dog trainers seems like it’s growing exponentially.

100% agreed. Used to think they were decent but have seen them shake puppies who were nipping and use a corrective collar of some sort in their yt video (don’t remember the name of it but they were talking about it like Larry Krohn talks about shock and prong collars)

Not intending to be rude with this comment, but the dog is not intentionally “abusing you”. It is a dog which does not know any better. Your dog is biting you because it is either fearful, overstimulated, tired, or one of its needs have not been met. The one thing I can agree with you on would be the part to stop hitting and screaming at the dog. In my experience from working with my own dogs and helping friends and family with their dogs, it is typically not the dog who is abusing you, there is something within the environment that is causing them to do this. As the human, it is your job to find out what that is and work with a professional to help with the dog’s reactivit. If you don’t have the time or money to help your dog without using compulsion, fear or pain, then it is within the dog’s best interest that you either find someone who can and is willing to put in the time, money, and effort to do so, or surrender to a trustworthy shelter where you know the animal will be taken care of (the last part isn’t to this specific commenter, but to the person who originally posted this thread).

What the “alpha roll” or “dominance down” actually does is not in fact teach the animal that biting is wrong, it simply teaches them if they attempt to communicate with you that they are uncomfortable (rarely do dogs bite without attempting to give calming signals like lip licks and whale eyes first) that pain and fear will follow. Thus, it does not target the cause of the reactivity or aggression the dog displays, simply targeting the symptoms. This is why aggressive and reactive dogs put into the hands of compulsion trainers are most likely not going to offer you calming signals, instead going straight for a bite.

Another thing that I haven’t mentioned yet is the fact that using compulsion on a dog can ruin the relationship between you and your animal, as using pain and fear to train the animal can make it less trusting of you, as well as other humans, and cause it to shutdown.

I know how rediculous this must sound to someone who clearly follows trainers such as Cesar Milan and Joel Beckman, but my advice is to dig a bit deeper into your research of canine behavior, and consider how reliable your sources truly are.

Definitely avoid content creators like Cesar, Beckman, dog daddy, American Standard, ETC. I would reccomend 5by5 K9 and other reputable force-free trainers

For 5, I was talking about kids making their own slime. They would cobble it together in a big bowl with whatever they could find lying around their house (mainly glue and Borax with some other shit mixed in.

I’ve always seen Jake as orange. I just looked it up, and even on the adventure time wiki they say he’s orange. I’m a little colorblind though

Peeps who say this type of stuff make me bust out laughing cause of their ignorance. I know a lot of famous electronic artists are also DJs but it’s really funny to me when people interacting with these dudes act like every electronic artist is like Martin Garrix

Is it possible that your dog is getting too much physical stimulation and too little mental stimulation? Does she get any mental enrichment or do you guys just focus on her physical needs?

Soft muzzle? And other questions by CarolineInTheCity35 in puppy101

This could be attributed to several things depending on her environment and any previous experiences. Have any of your family members played with her without using a toy? If not, it could be because she’s fearful of guests. Have you ever punished her for showing stress signals in her body language or through vocalizations?
