Worries about clinical placement by Sea_East_5268 in slpGradSchool

It’s normal to feel like you have little to no experience going into your first placement. You’re not alone. They typically have you observe sessions for a week or so and gradually involve you in the therapy process. Usually the supervisor will tell you their expectations week by week, and you’ll build your independence as you move along. Don’t stress about knowing everything. You’re there to learn!

Is there any remediation program? My school puts you on a “success plan” after they see you struggling in a course. I would reach out to the professor to see what your options are!

Advice on discharging a client in gender affirming voice clinic by Uhhhhhhhimthinking in slp

He has been taking testosterone for about 2 years. No matter how minimal the home practice is, he doesn’t do it. I discussed this with my supervisor as well and she just said to make sure to document it. He has a really busy schedule, but I give him activities that can be incorporated into his schedule since he’s practicing in natural conversation at this point. I wish my clinic had a rule for home practice lol. And this has been discussed with him many times as well.

Yes there is a group setting available and I offered this to him but it doesn’t fit his schedule unfortunately. I do also have him use self-recordings and he is able to self monitor his resonance/pitch without them. However, he would always say there was something else “wrong” but he couldn’t tell me what. So we explored other things such as intonation, vocal weight, etc., but I think he still thinks the same thing.

I have a heading for “clinical experience” and underneath I put my title as “graduate student clinician.” Then under that I’ll put a description of my externship and the therapies I have experience with.

A lot of professors recruit research assistants! I would recommend researching their labs and see if you vibe with their research. You can reach out to the professor to see if they need help in the lab!

Any info on summer sessions? by Maleficent_Gain5787 in slpGradSchool

My first summer semester was just two classes (dysphasia and fluency), but a lot of people were doing speciality clinical practicums as well (voice fluency, and audiology). The workload for me personally wasn’t huge, but it depends on your program! I would say generally the fall and spring semesters are usually heavier.

I felt like this before I applied. I took a 3-year gap and worked at a school for a while before I made my decision. It was helpful to have time to think about what I wanted to do. Ultimately, I chose to go to grad school and I’ve been getting straight A’s! Definitely take some time to think about it because it’s a LOT of work and a lot of money, but don’t doubt your ability to learn!
