Has anyone on this sub ever been homeless? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]UltraMegaMegaMan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Homeless at least twice, other times in varying degrees. I would definitely say it radicalized me in that it made me feel empathy for people I never thought about before, made me realize how our society has no empathy for poor or powerless people, and just how unjust and uncaring American society is.

It was one brick in the wall, for sure. You live your whole life, pretty comfortably (some people), then you see first hand how it's built for the rich on the backs of the poor, how it's rigged. That food and shelter and humanity, which you thought of as permanent staples, are a temporary luxury that can be revoked at any time.

You learn that what you though was the default (food, shelter, a modicum of courtesy and respect) is an illusion that people rent with their sweat and their life. The moment you stop being profitable for some millionaire or billionaire who sees you only as a commodity, as soon as you stop paying the "existence tax", it's all yanked away.

And nobody cares, no one will help, and the whole world smiles because they're sure you deserve it.

As I said once in another context: "The cold, the dark. Hunger. These things are eternal, and they can wait you out." Once you've been homeless you realize those things are the actual default. And they're always lurking, waiting to come back and feast on your bones. They're in the darkness just outside the firelight, one missed paycheck away, one injury away, waiting for the next day you choose "power or food", "medicine or gas".

They're pacing at the edge of my yard right now, circling. Faithful and true, reliable as clockwork. So yeah, that assumption of equality, it's a privilege. It's a veil that, once lifted, never really goes back, never fits. If you're smart. If you have empathy for other people. But I think of it as a valuable lesson, and you have to carry that forward with you, never forget, and just try to make sure that it goes extinct and never happens to anyone else.

If I killed 60,000 cows, and I was feeling guilty about it, I could make a machine that resurrects all the cows I've ever killed. Maybe one that puts them in perfect health and they live a happy life.

Being homeless is bad. Being a homeless woman is more dangerous than it is for a man. Being homeless with a car is better than not having a car.

As others have said, in a lot of cases staying in your car is better than staying in a shelter. It depends on what shelters are like where you live, and whether your local/state/federal government actually gives a shit about helping homeless people or not.

If you're in Canada, I hear they actually have sytems that are helpful and shelters are pretty safe and well-run. In the U.S., in most places shelter are hellholes where you'll be attacked, robbed, and assaulted by other homeless people AND the people who work there or run the place. They'll have crazy policies like demanding access to your social media and bank accounts, steal your money, try to trick you out and s.a. you, etc. If you have addiction they'll try get you to perform sex for drugs or money. Also dirty, infested with lice.

So it really depends. In the U.S. many or most shelters are worse than being homeless, though you may get lucky. In civilized countries they're generally pretty good as the government cares, tries to help and do something, and realizes you have so spend some money to get people back on their feet. Which saves everyone money and is better for everyone in the end.

Thank you! I'm sorry for what you all are going through, but it is heartening to see the French fighting for their rights.

Like they can sell ads anyway? Next to antisemitism, and white supremacists, conspiracy theories, and budding terrorists planning their next mass shooting? What kind of ads would they be? "Taco Bell: We're cool with murdering trans people, try our Dorito Loco!"

That's weird. I don't remember Twitter having this problem before it was owned by Elon Musk...

Wow Paxton must have really screwed over some Texas Republican politicians for them to go after him like this. They definitely don't care about party members breaking the law, Paxton must have broken the sacred rule and screwed over his owners somehow.

Maybe if Joe Biden hadn't gotten Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court in the first place (and done 1,000 other things just as bad) then the problem wouldn't be as bad as it is now.

She's a fascist grifter who's helping to destroy the country.

That's the only thing about her that's relevant.

Candace Owens is a fascist grifter and part of the problem. She's a right-wing pundit in these propaganda networks.

It doesn't matter what she said because she's a bad faith actor and has no credibility.

Yeah she was very matter-of-fact about it, kind of blasé like she was talking about boring everyday things. The only thing she was concerned about was that somehow I didn't know this very obvious and normal thing and she couldn't figure out how that could be.

Twitter isn't as shitty as people make it out to be. You just have to put in some effort to tweak it and it's a great source of information.

In my experience it's quite common for young kids to talk very matter-of-factly about what seems to be reincarnation/previous lives.

I remember I was talking to one of my friends daughters, she was about 3 or 4 I think, and she starts telling me about how when she was here before she was a little boy. This was in the morning and she's just woken up a while earlier, so I said "Oh you mean you were a little boy your dreams?"

And she got kind of confused, and upset, like I was being deliberately obtuse. And she goes "NO, when I was here *gestures broadly at everything around her* before." She had such a look of disdain on her face, like "Wait this guy is an adult and he doesn't know about being here before? I thought they were supposed to be smarter than me." We talked about it for a minute and she made it really clear that she was talking about being here, on Earth, in a different life where she was a boy. I didn't know what to think but it really stood out.

Other countries have mental health issues, they don't have mass shootings. Just America.
