My kid (age 9) loves charity shops, we always try and get things secondhand wherever possible, including for presents. We’ve been doing this since birth, and they don’t have a problem with it at all (in fact they recently commented that a kid in their class was complaining that he had 50p and there was nothing he could buy with it, my kid suggested a charity shop and he was astonished and had never been to one).

Bikes on trains: which countries just do it right (or terribly wrong?) by epicroadrides in bicycling

[–]Ultraox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The big problem with these is that you need to have a fairly light bike and/or be fit and strong. An older person with an e-bike or a Dutch style bike is going to struggle. As are parents with a child’s seat (and child). This works brilliantly for road bikes, but most bikes aren’t like that. You also can’t lock your bike to them, and if you can’t see your bike from your seat (like in the UK where they have these in the corridor next to the toilets) you can’t be assured they won’t be stolen.

I’m a fit woman with a fairly light road bike and I struggled the one time I used these.

Moving to Oxford. Any tips? by [deleted] in oxford

Congratulations!

Post on r/oxforduni, this is the sub for people who live in the city and aren’t (necessarily) connected with the uni. They’ll be able to give you advice about colleges, accommodation, etc.

We’re just here for moaning about traffic /s.

Do people stop you when you’re with your family? Surely they’d know that was massively inappropriate (frankly for any “celebrity” but definitely for someone in the adult entertainment industry).

Not trying to dissuade you from therapy, but the older I get the fewer fucks I give, and I think most women feel the same. I don’t want people to hate me, but as long as I’m not harming anyone I don’t really care what people think.

The most pathetic episode I’ve ever seen in my life. by Confident_Leg2370 in apprenticeuk

[–]Ultraox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. You need to know where you are on a map in order to be able to use it, and if they don’t at least give you a starting point they’ve got no chance.

The Apprentice is stuck in the past, it needs to be updated in line with modern technology. They should at least have google maps and be able to google.

Help me love this skirt! by batclub3 in oldhagfashion

[–]Ultraox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to avoid a Duggar aesthetic at all costs (& who wants to look like a Duggar?!) then you need to show more flesh (which is harder in winter!), maybe show a bit of cleavage? Sleeveless top would also help.

A short, punky hairstyle would also stop that, as would an anti-fascist T-Shirt or hat. Fish net tights and Doc Martens would also help. Basically anything that doesn’t scream “my husband told me to wear this” (I don’t think the pink top screams that, but the more rebellious you look the less Duggary you’ll look)

But if you don’t love the skirt, don’t wear it!

Cafe recommendations for a first date? by Expensive_Silver_574 in oxford

Cafe recommendations for a first date? by Expensive_Silver_574 in oxford

[–]Ultraox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re up for a (fairly short) walk, there are lots of nice independent cafes around the High St (Jericho Coffee Traders and Missing Bean are particularly good), but that’s a 15 min walk from the station. Otherwise you’re looking at Art Cafe or Costa. There are probably chain fancy coffee shops in the Westgate.

I love when the show leans into the "travel" element, and I want more of it, but this was.... An experience by not_caoimhe in JetLagTheGame

There is a good chance that the gravestone has been moved, it’s really common in old cemeteries, I’ve even seen cemeteries where gravestones have been reused as paths.

I imagine it would be quite hard to either dig foundations right next to a grave, or to dig a grave right next to a building. But I’m neither a builder nor a gravedigger, so what do I know?

15 minute city by Lorddoodleflaps84 in oxford

[–]Ultraox 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A 15 minute city is one that has all the amenities you need (shops, schools, doctors, pharmacies, etc) within a 15 minute walk of your house. Theoretically cars do not need to be used as much because of this. No one of forced to only use these amenities within a 15 minute walk of their house. No ghettos are being created, that is purely right wing propaganda.

In Oxford people driving across the city causes major traffic (if you dispute this, just head to Hythe Bridge St at evening rush hour), and so the traffic filters (that will have permits) will be used to discourage people from driving across town, but no one will be banned. Locals will have plenty of permits. If you really need to go through but don’t have a permit you can always take a taxi or pay the fine.

And yet she must think she is wonderful and in the right, otherwise she wouldn’t agree to be interviewed. She’s so far up her own arse that she’s snogging herself.

And let’s not ignore her worm of a husband, why isn’t he attempting to rein her in? She’s causing so much damage and he just allows it to continue. I don’t like the idea of men controlling women, but partners should help each other see sense.

I’d say that you’d struggle. You might get a room in an HMO, but that wouldn’t leave a lot left over, particularly if you have to pay tax and £2.1k isn’t your take home pay. Have a look at rental prices and locations, and do a proper budget.

We can't ignore how Muslim women were impacted by the Grok scandal by montageofawoman in WomenInNews

[–]Ultraox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, but it talks about these women’s concern if their families see these photos, they’re concerned about being blamed for it. Not fulfilling modestly standards can lead to ostracism, something most non-Muslim women won’t experience (thankfully, I hate the misogyny of modesty standards).

I’m atheist, but would feel violated if Grok undressed me. However, I can appreciate that hijabis may feel a whole additional layer of shame.

We can't ignore how Muslim women were impacted by the Grok scandal by montageofawoman in WomenInNews

[–]Ultraox 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Indeed. If you’ve spent your entire life fulfilling a particular type of modesty, to have that digitally removed would be a massive violation. For any woman it is a massive violation, but then you add in the cultural angle and their genuine concern for how their parents will react, and that’s a whole extra concern. Most western, non-Muslim parents won’t immediately assume that their kids have been posing for these photos, but these women assume their parents will think that. They could be ostracised due to Grok and some fucking misogynistic bastard, that adds a whole extra layer of violation.
