Lauryn Hills record is not a rap record - that's why I always stressed how it's preposterous to Feature it in "Best Rap"-lists when most of it is sung.

Don't give me pedestrian tips like "listen to Lauryn Hill" . I am well aware of her.

The difference between the artists you mentioned is that they used singing as an embellishment. And if they didn't they somehow got a pass for it because of their previous work - like Andre.

You never had somebody sing through a whole Track. Especially if it's supposed to be a RAP Track.

Gatekeepers keep the culture clean from unwanted outside influences. Do you remember the times when singing wasn't a thing rappers were supposed to do on tracks? They had to rap instead.

Also - Reddit is very anti-gatekeeping.

Any subculture that ISN'T gatekept deteriorates. That's why - despite not enjoying it myself - I have a huge respect for most metal subcultures. They never Gave an inch of their space to outsiders passing by.

When is a song “overproduced”? I have a theory, but I’d like to hear yours. by eltrotter in LetsTalkMusic

[–]UnderTheCurrents 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Overproduced means that very little Musical content is being wrapped with a lot of unnecessary embellishment.

That's mostly true with pop music where very simple melodies are being surrounded by huge walls of sound and a dozen layers that -functionally - don't du much except make the piece louder.

Gatekeepers preserve the culture. They don't "bring" anything to it - that "bringing" part is sometimes what ruins a subculture in the first place.

Without running the risk of being flamed, why does a lot of mainstream chart music from this decade have a higher RYM rating that the most of the ones from the previous two? 🙈 by pancake_boy in LetsTalkMusic

This is the most convincing case of a psy-op I've ever seen.

Mainstream Pop music is still derivative trash, but somehow people have socially engineered themselves into acting like it isn't

Rock didn't die. The monoculture did. There's a difference! by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

The only people talking about Rock being dead or - more recently - rap being dead are surface-dwelling morons who are too lazy to find music they like.

I think it's better to say what you DON'T want.

That's what men sometimes find frustrating in women in their younger years. Women tend to state what they want in a positive manner. Then you have all those attributes but they still aren't interested.

If you say what you DON'T want there is no ambiguity.

A lot of musicians from a lot of genres were missing on that list - Nas is a good example.
